North Georgia EMC is warning its members to be on alert for scam phone calls and text messages threatening to disconnect electric service.
NGEMC says it has received multiple reports of members receiving “disconnect” notices by phone or text when their accounts were not past due.
The cooperative advises anyone receiving one of these calls or messages to hang up and independently verify the status of their account. Members can check their balance by logging into their online NGEMC account or by calling the cooperative using one of its published telephone numbers.
NGEMC cautions customers to be particularly suspicious of threatening or high-pressure calls demanding immediate action.
Members should never use barcodes, QR codes, links, callback telephone numbers or email addresses provided by an unsolicited caller or message to make a payment or provide account information.
NGEMC also reminds customers that its employees will not ask for account information during an unsolicited call.
The cooperative will also not instruct customers to make payments through unusual methods or at specific third-party locations, such as paying cash at a retailer.
Anyone receiving a suspicious disconnect notice should avoid responding to the message or using contact information supplied by the caller. Instead, contact North Georgia EMC directly through its official channels to determine whether there is actually an issue with the account.
