Free Tree Giveaway Announced By North Georgia EMC

North Georgia EMC is once again helping members go green with its annual tree giveaway.

The utility will give away up to 200 free trees on Thursday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of its Energy Saving Tree Program.

Trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one tree per member. Participants must bring a copy of their NGEMC power bill to claim a tree.

Pickup locations include NGEMC offices in Calhoun, Dalton, and Fort Oglethorpe.

Available tree varieties may include Bur Oak, Red Sunset Maple, White Fringe Tree, Chickasaw Plum, and Highbush Blueberry, while supplies last.

The program is designed to help homeowners plant trees in the right locations to reduce energy costs by providing shade and lowering cooling needs during the summer months.

The giveaway is open to NGEMC members only.

North Georgia EMC Warns of Scam Messages Claiming Rolling Blackouts

North Georgia EMC is warning members about scam emails and messages circulating across the Southeast that falsely claim the TVA is preparing for rolling blackouts and urge recipients to click a link for more information.

The utility says these messages are not legitimate and are designed to steal money and/or install viruses on your device, and they are not coming from TVA or any power provider.

Officials say another related scam involves messages claiming a customer has unusually high power usage and demanding immediate payment. North Georgia EMC stresses those messages are also fake and warns members not to click any links, share personal information, or respond to threatening payment demands.

If you receive a suspicious message, delete it and contact your utility directly using an official phone number or website.

North Georgia EMC Sent Crews to Assist Co-ops Hard Hit by Winter Storm Fern

North Georgia EMC sent line crews to help restore power in other areas after Winter Storm Fern, using the mutual-aid network that electric cooperatives rely on when storms cause widespread damage. NGEMC said it has both provided and received assistance through this system in past emergencies.

After it became clear NGEMC’s service area missed the worst impacts of the storm, three NGEMC crews were dispatched Sunday to regions hit much harder. One crew assisted Amicalola EMC on Sunday before continuing on to Habersham EMC in northeast Georgia on Monday, January 26. Two additional crews traveled north to support Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative in Tennessee.

NGEMC asked residents to keep storm victims and the crews working long hours in their thoughts as recovery continued. North Georgia EMC serves 3,614 members in Chattooga County.

As a severe winter storm threatens parts of Georgia with the potential for destructive ice and snow, both Georgia Power and North Georgia EMC (NGEMC) have announced temporary suspensions of service disconnections to help keep customers safe during the event.
