A Summerville man who was acquitted of murder in the 2025 shooting death of Christopher “DJ” Chapman has now been sentenced on the two charges for which a Chattooga County jury found him guilty.

Deoveon LaWayne Price was sentenced Tuesday by Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Melissa Hise to a total of 25 years, with the first five years to be served in confinement and the remaining 20 years on probation.

The case stems from the June 6, 2025 shooting on Oak Street in Summerville that claimed the life of 27-year-old Chapman. Summerville Police responded to Oak Street shortly after 12:30 PM and found Chapman unresponsive in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Chattooga ER, where he was pronounced dead.

Price was taken into custody a short time later during a traffic stop on Taylors Ridge. Police said their investigation indicated Price and Chapman had been involved in a physical altercation before Chapman was shot.

Following a trial last month in Chattooga County Superior Court, jurors found Price not guilty of malice murder and felony murder. He was convicted of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Jurors found him not guilty on another firearm count.

According to the final disposition, Price received 20 years on the aggravated assault conviction and five years on the firearm conviction, with the firearm sentence running consecutively. The combined sentence is 25 years, with five years in confinement and the balance on probation, subject to the conditions imposed by the court.

Price will receive credit for time already served dating back to June 6, 2025, when he was arrested. He was represented by attorneys Sutton Connelly and Steven Miller. The case was prosecuted by Lynsay Chapman with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
