Chattooga County and much of Northwest Georgia are seeing a shift toward unsettled weather as a strong storm system moves through the Southeast, bringing widespread rainfall and the chance for isolated thunderstorms from Sunday through early Monday morning.
Forecasters say conditions will gradually deteriorate as the system approaches, with rain becoming more widespread overnight and into Sunday. While the strongest thunderstorms are expected to remain south of Northwest Georgia, mainly across parts of central Georgia, residents locally could still experience brief heavy downpours, lightning, and gusty winds as the line of showers moves through.
Meteorologists note that limited instability across Northwest Georgia should keep the severe weather threat low, but a couple of stronger storms cannot be completely ruled out, especially if storms briefly intensify as they move east. Rainfall amounts are expected to be moderate, though the persistent nature of the rain could lead to ponding of water on roads and reduced visibility, particularly during the Sunday night and Monday morning commute.
By Monday afternoon, conditions begin to improve as the rain exits to the east. Drier air quickly moves in behind the front, setting the stage for a noticeable warm-up across the region. Winds turning southerly by Tuesday will help temperatures rebound, with highs climbing into the 70s by midweek across Chattooga County and all of Northwest Georgia.
Looking ahead to late week, the forecast turns increasingly springlike. Sunshine will dominate, and by Thursday and Friday, some areas could flirt with the upper 70s, making it one of the warmest stretches so far this year. While models hint at a slight chance of light rain in North Georgia late Friday, most of the region should remain dry.
For now, residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware through Monday morning, then take advantage of the warm, quiet conditions expected to close out the week.
