A sharp turn back to winter weather is bringing more than just chilly air — it’s also raising the risk of wildfires across Chattooga County and the rest of Northwest Georgia. Forecasters say dry air, breezy northwest winds, and dry fuels will combine Tuesday afternoon through early evening, prompting a Red Flag Warning.
A Red Flag Warning is the National Weather Service’s alert that wildfire conditions are dangerously favorable. It’s issued when low relative humidity, gusty winds, and dry vegetation line up in a way that can allow fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly. During a Red Flag Warning, even a small spark — from outdoor burning, equipment, or roadside debris — can become a fast-moving fire in minutes.
Today’s setup includes northwest winds around 10–15 mph with gusts near 25 mph, while relative humidity drops below 25%. With limited recent rainfall, officials strongly urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and use extra caution with anything that could produce a spark.
The cold continues tonight with lows in the 20s, then temperatures begin a slow rebound Wednesday into the low to mid-50s. Fire danger may remain elevated Wednesday, though lighter winds should help reduce the most critical conditions.
Looking ahead, New Year’s Day (Thursday) is expected to be sunny and milder, with highs in the mid-50s to lower 60s. Rain chances return Friday into Saturday with showers and a few thunderstorms, and while severe weather is not expected, rainfall of around a half inch to one inch could provide some relief from dry conditions.
