A newly released national study is putting renewed attention on food insecurity in Northwest Georgia, including Chattooga County, where poverty, access to grocery stores and the number of households relying on food assistance all point to continuing challenges for local families.
CRC Chattooga is looking for volunteers willing to give a little of their time each week to help deliver food to local families who are unable to visit the food pantry themselves.
The organization is currently seeking a two-person volunteer delivery team that can work together one day each week to deliver food boxes to families in need throughout the community.
According to CRC Chattooga, volunteers would typically deliver only two to four food boxes each week, but those deliveries can make a significant difference for families who cannot travel to the pantry to pick up food.
The opportunity could be a good fit for two friends, spouses, family members or others who would like to volunteer together while helping their neighbors.
CRC Chattooga provides food and other assistance to individuals and families throughout Chattooga County.
Anyone interested in joining the volunteer delivery team is encouraged to contact CRC Chattooga directly or send the organization a message through its Facebook page for additional information.
The Community Resource Center of Chattooga is turning to the community for help replacing an aging roof that leaders say has reached the end of its lifespan and could threaten services relied upon by thousands of local families.
There’s Hope for the Hungry will be in Trion today, Thursday, August 13, providing free groceries to families and individuals in the community.
The food distribution will be held at Central Avenue Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
There is no identification required to receive groceries. However, recipients must be present at the distribution to receive the food.
The church’s free Clothes Closet will also be open today from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., providing another resource for those in need.
Central Avenue Baptist Church is located at 14074 Highway 27 in Trion, behind Dixie Subs.
Organizers encourage anyone who could benefit from the assistance to stop by during the distribution hours.

Georgia continues to rank among the states with the highest payment error rates in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), according to newly released federal data, prompting state officials to implement changes aimed at improving accuracy and avoiding future financial penalties.
The Community Resource Center of Chattooga is inviting area residents to attend its monthly Resource Fair on Monday, July 6, where families can connect with local organizations and learn about services available in the community.
The Resource Fair will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Representatives from a variety of local agencies and organizations will be available to provide information and connect attendees with programs and resources designed to help individuals and families.
As a thank-you for attending the Resource Fair, participants will qualify to receive a free 24-pack of beverages. Available choices include Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, Mountain Dew, Mug Root Beer and Zero Sugar Gatorade.
The Community Resource Center’s Food Pantry will also be open that day from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in a separate location within the building.
Organizers note that visitors do not have to pick up a food box on July 6, but they must attend the Resource Fair to qualify for the free 24-pack of drinks.
The Community Resource Center says its goal is to ensure everyone has access to resources, support and opportunities that help families thrive.
