Salvation Army Angel Tree Registration Event Set For October 27

The Salvation Army in Rome will hold a special Angel Tree registration event on Tuesday, October 27, giving qualifying families and senior citizens an opportunity to apply for Christmas assistance.

The registration event will take place from 1 PM until 3 PM at Dirt Pour Coffee and Cafe.

Cristina Tilley with the Salvation Army in Rome says the Angel Tree program is available to children under the age of 12 whose parents’ income does not exceed 130 percent of the federal poverty level. Senior citizens ages 65 and older may also qualify for assistance.

Parents registering children will need to bring a photo ID, proof of income for both parents, proof of address, and birth certificates for all qualifying children.

Senior citizens applying for assistance will need to provide identification, proof of income, and proof of address.

The Angel Tree program helps provide Christmas gifts to children and seniors in need during the holiday season.

Those interested in receiving assistance are encouraged to have all required documents ready when they arrive for registration on October 27.

Residents in the Teloga area are invited to take part in a Community Food Drive this Saturday, September 19, aimed at helping local families and strengthening the community.

The food distribution will be held from 10 AM until noon, or until supplies run out, at Beersheba Presbyterian Church, located at 9977 Highway 337 in Summerville.

Organizers say no identification is required to receive food. Those planning to attend are asked not to line up before 9:30 AM.

The event is being held under the theme “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” and is designed to provide food assistance to people and families in the community.

Volunteers are also needed to help with Saturday’s distribution.

The Teloga Community Food Drive is being made possible with support from the Atrium Health Floyd-Polk Foundation and Helping Hands Food Support Community.

Organizers say the goal is simple: bring neighbors together to support one another and help build a stronger Teloga community.

CRC Chattooga is asking local churches, civic organizations, businesses, youth groups and other volunteers to lend a hand with several projects as the organization prepares for the fall and winter months.

The Summerville-based organization says it has two major projects coming up and hopes groups from throughout Chattooga County will consider volunteering.

The first project is a painting crew needed next weekend. CRC Chattooga is looking for one group, or several smaller groups, willing to help paint the organization’s Distribution Room and Produce Room.

Organizers say the project could be a good service opportunity for a church group, Sunday School class, youth group, business, civic organization or simply a group of friends looking for a way to help in the community.

CRC Chattooga is also looking for volunteers to help with its Clothes Closet as the organization makes the seasonal transition from summer to fall and winter clothing.

That project will include hanging and sorting clothes, organizing the Clothes Closet, putting away summer items and getting winter clothing ready for distribution. The work can be completed during the same weekend as the painting project or at another time during the following week.

CRC officials say having several volunteers working together can make relatively quick work of the projects while helping the organization prepare to serve families during the colder months.

The organization operates from 50 Eleanor Avenue in Summerville and provides assistance to people in need in Chattooga County.

Anyone with a church, business, organization, family or group of friends interested in taking on one of the projects is encouraged to contact CRC Chattooga directly. The organization can be reached at 706-808-0477 or through its Facebook page.

There’s Hope for the Hungry will be in Trion this Thursday, September 10, offering free groceries to area residents.

The food distribution will be held at Central Avenue Baptist Church in Trion from 10 AM until 1 PM.

No identification is required to receive groceries. However, recipients must be present to receive the food.

The free Clothes Closet will also be open Thursday from 10 AM until 12:30 PM. The Clothes Closet is located at 14074 Highway 27 in Trion, behind Dixie Subs.

Residents who could benefit from either program are encouraged to take advantage of the services and to share the information with friends, neighbors or family members who may need assistance.

CRC Chattooga is asking the community to help restock its Clothes Closet, with a special need right now for men’s clothing and shoes.

The organization recently shared the story of a guest who came in hoping to find something many people may take for granted — a pair of shoes that actually fit. After finding a pair in the Clothes Closet, she was so excited that she told volunteers she did not want to take them off, even to sleep. CRC officials said the moment was a reminder of how much a simple donation can mean to someone in need.

CRC Chattooga’s Clothes Closet operates much like a free thrift store for the families the organization serves. Clothing, shoes, household goods, personal care products and other donated non-food necessities are available through a point system, but there is no charge to the families receiving the items.

Right now, the organization is especially looking for gently used men’s shirts, jeans, pants, jackets, shoes and other clothing.

CRC Chattooga is encouraging local residents to take a look through their closets and consider donating items they no longer wear. An unused shirt or pair of shoes could make an important difference for a neighbor who needs it.

Donations may be taken to CRC Chattooga at 50 Eleanor Avenue in Summerville.
