Nature lovers of all ages are invited to lace up their hiking shoes and head to James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park this weekend for a guided Turtle Hike.
Nature lovers will have an opportunity to explore the outdoors after dark during a special bat-themed hike at James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park on Friday, June 6.
The “Into the Dark: Bat Hike” program will begin at 8:30 p.m. and take participants on a guided nighttime trek to the Marble Mine while learning about one of Northwest Georgia’s most misunderstood creatures.
Park rangers will discuss the important role bats play in the environment, including what they eat, how they help control insect populations, and the unique adaptations that allow them to thrive at night.
Participants are encouraged to bring plenty of water and wear comfortable walking shoes. The group will meet in front of the park office before the hike begins.
The cost is $3 per person, and a $10 park pass is required.

Park Manager Katy Gramling says summer adventures at the park include several camping options, including electric campsites, backcountry campsites and a pioneer campground with water but no electricity.
Gramling says weekend reservations are mostly booked into June, but weekday campers may have a better chance of finding an available site.
Upcoming events at the park include Junior Ranger Camps June 10-12, June 22-25 and July 16-17. The camps are designed for children ages 6 to 12 and include outdoor skills, crafts and ranger-led activities. The park will also host “Star Spangled S’mores and Stories” on July 4 at 7 PM, featuring campfire games, a storybook, hot cocoa and s’mores.

The event is set for May 24th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park, located near Summerville in Chattooga County. Volunteers will be set up next to the park’s visitor center, serving a variety of homemade ice cream flavors for just $3 per cup.
Organizers say the event is a great opportunity for families and visitors to enjoy a refreshing dessert while supporting the park. Both cash and card payments will be accepted.
Visitors should note that a $10 park pass or annual pass is required for parking inside the state park.

Families in Chattooga County have a chance to celebrate the season today as the Easter Bunny makes a special appearance at Sloppy Floyd State Park.
The event, hosted by the Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park, will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the fire ring located in front of the park office.
Children will have the opportunity to take photos with the Easter Bunny at no cost, and each child will receive a treat bag during the event.
A $10 parking pass or an annual park pass is required per vehicle to enter the park. However, a limited number of parking passes are available for checkout at no cost through the Chattooga and Trion Libraries.
