Two soldiers based at Fort Benning, Georgia, died and three others were injured in a weather-related incident Tuesday during training on a mountain in the northern part of the state, Army officials said Tuesday.
The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office was called to a Sloppy Floyd Lake Road address and met with a woman who said she was turning onto Sloppy Floyd Lake Road from Highway 27 when she saw a Chevrolet truck and a man running towards it from a car that had been parked on the side of the road for about a week. The woman said she went and looked at the vehicle and noticed that the back passenger side window had been damaged and several items were laying on the ground near the vehicle. Deputies contacted the owner of the vehicle, who was at work at the time, and let her know that the disabled car was being towed to her residence and that she should look inside and see what all was missing. The incident was turned over to an investigator.
The American Floorcovering Alliance Inc. (AFA) has donated $135,000 to Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) to support the college’s flooring industry programs.
The Summerville City Council met on Monday evening of this week and approved special cups to be sold to alcohol vendors for the new entertainment district. The council approved the downtown entertainment district earlier and have now approved cups that will be sold to allow people the ability to walk around the designated area and drink alcohol. The council approved a price of .75 cents per cup that will be paid by the businesses that wish to sell alcohol in the entertainment area. The specially designated cups will cost the city about .25 cents per cup. The City of Summerville modeled their idea for the downtown entertainment district along the same lines as the City of Rome.

MR. LANE EUGENE FARMER, SR. – Age 67, of Trion, Georgia passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2022. He was born on March 18, 1955 to his parents, the late Clarence and Cornelia Price Farmer. He was preceded by his son, Lane Eugene Farmer, Jr, brothers, Clarence, Melvin, Michael, Aubrey, Lannie, and Craig Farmer, one sister, Fran Marilyn Farmer.
Survivors are his wife of forty-two years, Sandra Sichr Farmer; daughter, Misty Farmer, Kanisha Farmer; brother Homer Farmer, Jerrell Farmer; six grandchildren, one great grandchild; uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral Service for Mr. Lane Eugene Farmer, Sr. will be Friday, August 12, 2022 at 3:00 P. M. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 281 Georgia Avenue, Summerville, Georgia 30747, with Pastor Kevin Roach, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Interment, Pennville Cemetery in Summerville, Georgia. Arrangements by Willis Funeral Home, Inc., Dalton, Georgia.
Chesterfield Baptist Church will be conducting their Homecoming services on Sunday August the 14th. There will be special singing by Dallas Rogers. Services will begin at 11am Eastern time. Everyone is welcomed to attend.
