Spring Sports Signup Ends February 18th

Spring sports registration is going on through February 18th for local Recreation Departments.   County residents pay a $25 registration fee at either the Summerville or Trion Recreation Departments.  The age control date for spring sports is September 1, 2023.  A copy of the child’s birth certificate needs to be on file.  If you need more information, you can contact the Trion Recreation Department at 706-734-2011 or the Summerville Recreation Department at 706-859-0910.

Go Fund Me Account Set Up For Deceased Menlo Woman’s Children

The family of a Menlo woman who died from a suspected fentanyl overdose last week in Walker County has set up a Go Fund Me account to help the woman’s two daughters, one who has special needs.

Martin Street Man Charged After Domestic Incident

Summerville Police arrested a Martin Street man last week after he got into a verbal and physical altercation with his girlfriend.  Police were called to the scene of the incident and said that when they arrived Steven Lee McGaugh was screaming at the woman.  According to the police report, McGaugh “kept on being irate during the investigation”.  Police also said that McGaugh could be heard screaming outside the residence by neighbors.  McGaugh was arrested on disorderly conduct charges and booked into the Chattooga County Jail shortly after 9 PM last Wednesday.

A fifty-six-year-old Aragon man is dead following a shooting on Reservoir Street in Rome Saturday.

Rep. Greene Blames Fentanyl Deaths On Border Security

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene is blaming the lack of border security with Mexico for the fentanyl deaths that happened in Walker County last week.  Those three deaths included a woman from Chattooga County.

Historical Society Looking For High School Annuals

The Chattooga County Historical Society is helping the Chattooga County Public Library build a complete set of all annuals from schools located in Chattooga County.  The yearbooks will be placed in the Georgia Reference Room at the library in Summerville.  The Chattooga County Historical Society says that they have a good start on the collection, but still have missing years.  They need annuals from the 1950’s for Summerville High School and annuals from 1985 and beyond for Chattooga High School.  Also, they need annuals from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s and a few of the 1980’s for Trion High School.  If you have annuals that you can donate, you are asked to take them by the Chattooga County Library, located at 360 Farrar Drive in Summerville.  The library is open from 9 AM – 6 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 9 AM – 8 PM on Thursday, 10 AM -2 PM on Saturday and is closed on Wednesday and Sunday.

GBI Identifies New Jersey Man In Officer Involved Shooting In Gordon County

Over the weekend, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified a New Jersey man as the one who was shot and killed by law enforcement officers in Calhoun late last week.
