Traffic crashes in Georgia over the Labor Day holiday travel period which began Friday, September 1, at 6:00 p.m., and ended Monday, September 4, at 11:59 p.m., resulted in 21 deaths.
A sixty-year-old Rome man was arrested shortly after midnight on Friday after he was found parked in front of a residence in Summerville. According to Summerville Police, the homeowners said that they did not want the man at the residence, but he remained parked outside. Manfred Atkins was charged with loitering and prowling and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The Summerville City Council will be meeting for their regular monthly meeting for September coming up on Monday evening, September 11th. The council will be asked to approve over $15,000 in new turnout gear for the Summerville Fire Department. Also on the agenda for Monday, the council will be looking at approving changing the old tennis courts to pickle ball courts at an estimated cost of $45,600. The council is also looking at extending natural gas lines to a poultry farm located at 769 Oak Hill Road at a cost of $30,336. Monday evening’s meeting will take place at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall. There will be a question and answer session with the mayor and council members at 4:30 PM. The public is invited to attend.
Local farmers and agricultural producers who were adversely affected by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible to apply for a local farm grant. If you didn’t get in on the last grant application period, you have another chance to apply before October 16, 2023.
Patients and visitors driving to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center should plan on arriving earlier than scheduled on Monday because of work that will limit the number of available parking spaces at the hospital.
The Chattooga Indians got their first win of the season Friday night, defeating Coahulla Creek 17-14. The Trion Bulldogs were on the road and defeated Gordon Central 65-6 and are now 3-0 on the season. Congratulations to both local teams on their wins.
Mrs. Irene Roberts, age 102 of Trion, GA passed away September 7, 2023 at a Rome Hospital.
Mrs. Roberts was born March 26, 1921 in Etowah, AL. She loved dogs and was a Southern Baptist and was very devoted to her faith.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Roberts, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.
Survivors include her son, Randall Roberts, grandchildren: Greg Roberts and Alicia Direnzo, great-grandchildren: Joshua Roberts, Brandon Roberts, Kilee Direnzo and Ashley Direnzo, and her dog, Ben.
Graveside and interment services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Roberts will take place Saturday September 9, 2023 at 11:00 am in Subligna Cemetery with Rev. George Pinion officiating. Pallbearers will be: Nolan Crisp, Noah McQuese, Eli McQuese, Robert McQuese, Anthony McWhorter, and Will McWhorter.
The family will receive friends Saturday September 9, 2023 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Mason Funeral Home.
In Lieu of Flowers the family respectively request donations to the National Society of Preventing the Cruelty to Animals.

Mr. Horace Sneed age 78 of Summerville, GA passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023 at a Rome hospital.
Mr. Payne was born July 15, 1945 in Cummings, GA to Susie Eller Sneed.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his son, Horace E. Sneed and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his sons, Gary (Rhonda) Sneed, Larry (Nancy) Sneed, and Jerry Sneed; daughter, Susan Hunter; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mr. Sneed will be scheduled by the family at a later date.
