Bosom Buddies Meeting At Advent Health Redmond

Bosom Buddies, a community-wide breast cancer support group, will meet on Monday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 7 pm in the boardroom at AdventHealth Redmond.

Bosom Buddies is open to the public for anyone affected by breast cancer. Each meeting is led by a different guest speaker, a light dinner is provided and a donated door prize is given. The meeting will be led by Paige Godwin, RN.

More Details On This Week’s Railroad Crossing Repairs

Railroad crossing repairs will begin this Friday in Summerville, that according to the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway.   The repairs will be made at the crossing on Highway 27 near the intersection of Highland Avenue.  The work will begin on September 8th around 7 PM and will be completed by Monday, September 11th around 7 PM.  All lanes of Highway 27 will be closed during the repairs at the tracks.  Detour signs will be installed that will guide traffic northbound passing through Chattooga County.  The detour route will be Highway 48 (the Menlo Highway) and take northbound traffic to Highway 337 in Menlo.  From there the traffic will go to Walker County and be directed back to Highway 27.  Detour signs will be installed to make through-traffic aware of the detour.

Tillotson-Menlo Charitable Foundation Grant Applications Being Accepted

It’s that time of year again.  The Tillotson Menlo Charitable Foundation will now begin accepting grant applications for 2023.  The Foundation began in 2005 with a $1,000,000 donation from Tillotson Corporation and over the next five years the Tillotson Corporation contributed an additional $9,000,000 to the Foundation.  The amount of grant money is generally determined by the amount of interest accrued each year on the principal amount in the foundation account.

Summerville To Begin Installing New Playground Equipment At Dowdy Park

New playground equipment is coming to J.R. “Dick” Dowdy Park.  The City of Summerville said that installation of the new playground equipment will begin today, September 6th.   While the work is going on, the city is asking people to use extra caution at the park.  Also, the playground area will be closed until the installation is complete.

Steam Train Returns To Summerville September 16th

Summerville is home to one of only a few operating train turntables in the southeastern United States, and is truly a step back in time for train and history buffs alike. The City of Summerville is proud to announce the return of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Engines to the Historic Summerville Depot on Saturday, September 16. The Summerville Turntable will work again for the first time since 2019. A double steam engine arrival and a Chili & Brunswick Stew Cook-Off, celebrating with live music and vendors will be a highlight for the welcome back return on September 16th.

Firearms Stolen In Highway 48 Burglary

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary that took place on Tuesday of last week on Highway 48 in Summerville.  Police responded to a call from Nathan Plant who said that when he arrived from work he noticed that his front door had been broken open.  Plant said that once inside, he discovered that three firearms, a tactical box and $500 in cash was missing from his residence.  The complainant told the responding deputy that no one ever used his front door, so he didn’t believe it was someone he knows that stole the items.  The incident has been turned over to an investigator.

Jerry “Poobie” Glenn Payne, Obit (M)

Mr. Jerry “Poobie” Glenn Payne age 65 of Trion passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 31, 2023 as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Payne was born November 7, 1957 in Whitwell, TN to the late J.M. Payne and JoAnn Cash. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills after 46 of years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and of Pennville Church of Christ.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Annelle Payne; and brothers, Eddie Payne and Ronnie Dykes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Paulette Lowrance; daughters, Brianna Payne, Heather Thompson, Brittany Payne, Amber Tapp, and Chastity Fowler; step-son, Michael Hammond; siblings Kevin cash and Kim Manning; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Payne will take place at 2:00 PM Friday- September 8, 2023 at the chapel of Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Lamar Russell and Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Garrett Cemetery with Zach McGuire, Levi McGuire, David Tapp, Chris Baggett, Michael Hammond and Matthew Tapp serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Baggett, Jack Baggett, and the staff of the Preparation Department of Mt. Vernon Mills.

The family will receive friends Friday, September 8 from 12:00 noon until the service hour.
