Today is National Hunting and Fishing Day, and Georgia residents will be able to fish without a license as part of the celebration — including those taking part in a special day of activities at James H Floyd State Park near Summerville.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says Saturday, September 26, is a Free Fishing Day statewide. Georgia residents will not need a fishing license or trout license to fish in public waters, including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas.

The free fishing day comes at an ideal time locally, as Sloppy Floyd State Park hosts its Outdoor Adventure Day from 10 AM until 4 PM Saturday.

One of the day’s biggest attractions will be the Kids Fishing Rodeo. Children ages 15 and younger can fish for tagged catfish and win prizes. Participants should bring their own fishing poles and bait, but no fishing license will be required Saturday.

Outdoor Adventure Day will offer much more than fishing. Activities include archery, a birds of prey program, reptile programs, a climbing wall and dunk tank. Food and refreshments will also be available for purchase.

Saturday’s celebration is part of a statewide observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The observance dates back to 1972 and recognizes the role hunters and anglers have played in wildlife conservation and funding programs that protect habitat and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Georgia offers three Free Fishing Days each year. The first two were held in June during National Fishing and Boating Week, with September 26 marking the final Free Fishing Day of 2026.

Outdoor Adventure Day itself is free, although a $10 per vehicle parking fee is required at the park.
