A Rome woman was in jail Friday after she was found with a bag of suspected methamphetamine and Percocet pills that were not in an original container after she was pulled over at the intersection of John Maddox Drive and Redmond Circle, reports stated.

According to Floyd County Jail reports:

Julie Kathleen Harrell, 53, of Kraftsman Road, was arrested and charged with possession of meth and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

She is also charged with crossing guard lines with drugs after another bag of meth was found on her after she was searched at the jail.

She is also charged with drugs not in original container, driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence.

Harrell was being held without bond late Friday.

A shoplifting incident turned into a drug bust in Lafayette.  Police arrived at the Food City Store in response to a woman being accused by store personnel of shoplifting; employees say she was placing items in her pocketbook; she was also accused of attempting to run and of fighting with store employees who tried to stop her.

In addition to approximately $75.00 worth of merchandise taken from the store the officers found two types of pills in her purse.

As a result Carley Holland was charged with shoplifting the possession of a schedule II drug and possession of a schedule IV drug in addition to driving on a suspended license.

Rather than replace downtown sidewalks with concrete the City of Summerville has chosen to use sod instead, which business owners are seemed pleased with.  The work began at the corner of East Washington and Commerce across from the courthouse and should be done by the end of the coming week.

According to the Summerville News the city council set aside $50,000 earlier in the year for sidewalk improvements; the council is also looking at the possibility of installing additional brick flower beds and perhaps some trees in certain areas.

While efforts are being made to make the sidewalks safer and to add more “curb appeal” to the area, according to the paper there is some concern that the Chattooga Historical Society was never consulted about the changes taking place in the historic downtown district.

What apparently began as an argument over money, escalated into an incident which left a man lying on the ground, bleeding.   The Summerville News reports that deputies arrived at the location to find Aleah Reece standing next to a white Saturn in the driveway, while near the car, a man was lying on the ground not moving with what the deputy called “a puddle of blood” around his head.

EMS was called to the scene and the man, later identified as Vance Adams of an Orchard Hill Road address told law enforcement that the accident happened after he and Reece when he and Reece got into an argument regarding money.

According to Adams, Reece said she was going to her car to get the money – but, instead she started to leave, and that’s when he became trapped behind the open car door, forcing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete driveway. 

Reece, on the other hand stated that she had was trying to leave after the confrontation had became physical and Adams had slapped her.

Both parties agreed that the incident regarding Adams injuries was an accident and Reece had no intention of causing harm – and both declined to press charges.

The 5th annual Breakfast with Santa event is fast approaching.

Chattooga County Extension Coordinator Rebecca Thomas tells us the special gathering will take place Saturday, December 5th at the Summerville First Baptist Family Life Center.

There will be two seating’s, at 8:30 and 10:30am with each breakfast lasting approximately an hour; during that time the attendees will be served breakfast by Santa’s elves with a visit from Santa himself to follow.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Seating IS limited – tickets are available at the Extension Office, Summerville Farm Bureau, and P&P Country Store.  You are encouraged to purchase your tickets early.

A disabled Chickamauga woman who was pulled from her burning home by Walker County firefighters several days ago, has died from her injuries.

71 year old Nevely Lewis died in an Atlanta Burn Unit.

She had suffered burns to her throat from inhaling smoke; two other family members did manage to safely exit the home.

That fire is still under investigation as a possible case of arson.

One person was taken to Floyd Medical Center following a two-vehicle accident on the new West Rome Bypass at Turner Bend Road on Thursday. 

According to PFC Katherine Payne of the Floyd County Police Department, a Toyota pickup truck was traveling eastbound on the bypass, and a Ford pickup was attempting to turn on to the bypass from Turner Bend, when the two collided.

The driver of the Ford, identified as 62-year old Steven Soller of Lindale – sustained a cut to the arm, but was otherwise uninjured. The driver of the Toyota, 56-year old Terry Hobbs of Aragon, had to be extricated from his vehicle and transported to the hospital.

The wreck occurred at around 3:30pm.

No citations were issued.
