About $2,000 worth of items were stolen from a Cloudland residence, according to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s report.

Menlo resident Edwin Coleman Thompson reported Monday that someone broke into a house in Cloudland that he uses for storage. He knew someone broke into the house because the door, which was previously nailed shut, was forced open.

The house is located at 286 Atlanta Avenue. Thompson told Deputy Kenneth Craig that someone has been trying to steal his stuff “for a while.”

The Georgia Supreme Court today (May 7) issued its opinion unanimously affirming the convictions of Lance Coleman Rockholt. Rockholt was indicted and convicted for the Oct. 28, 2005 murder of Mark Anthony Pickett in a road rage incident in Walker county. Upon his conviction, Rockholt was sentenced by judge, Kristina Connelly Graham to serve life in prison on the murder charge plus a consecutive five-year sentence to be served as a recidivist without the possibility of parole for possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. 

In a preliminary step to the construction of the Trion School’s new multi- service buildng, the Trion Town Council Thursday night approved a bond resolution allowing the Trion Board of Education to borrow $6 Million Dollars at a fixed rate of interest. According to Superintendent Phil Williams this is the first step in the school system being able to use SPLOST funding for the school’s multi-purpose facility. 

Thursday evening the board also approved a contract between United Water Solutions to maintain its fire hydrants. Of the 105 hydrants in town, 50 are new. The company will help maintain the older hydrants according to the Mayor.

Also the council approved the installation of a new pool lift and other handicapped accessible features  required by the Americans With Diabilities Act. Recreation Department Director Nolan Crisp said the lift will cost $7,000 to $8,000 with rails for the pool steps costing an additional $2500. He said the renovations must be made before the pool can open this summer.

 The council also named Michael Miller the new court prosecutor after the resignation of the previous prosecutor. The position pays $250 per court session.

In his regular monthly meeting Thursday, Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters awarded bids for the Agricultural Pavilion. Bids were awarded to Bandini Construction of Centre, Al, for $39,945.00 for interior work; Willie’s Plumbing, Summerville, for $4,245.00 for interior plumbing: and Dixie Concrete, Trion, for $25,900 for interior concrete work.  

Bids were opened for the renovation of the Chattooga County Civic Center.  Those bidding on the project were K&R Construction, Summerville, $24,750 for exterior work and $33,625 for exterior labor; Willie’s Plumbing, Summerville, $22.717 for plumbing work; and Hampton Heating and Air, Lyerly, offered two separate bids for replacing the heating and air system at $31,000 and 42,000. Bids will be awarded at a later date.

In other business, Winters named Dr. Wayne Richey to the Chattooga County Board of heath to serve in the M.D. post on the baord. Richey is affiliated with Redmond Family Practice in Trion.
