Jerry “Poobie” Glenn Payne, Obit (M)

Mr. Jerry “Poobie” Glenn Payne age 65 of Trion passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 31, 2023 as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Payne was born November 7, 1957 in Whitwell, TN to the late J.M. Payne and JoAnn Cash. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills after 46 of years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and of Pennville Church of Christ.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Annelle Payne; and brothers, Eddie Payne and Ronnie Dykes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Paulette Lowrance; daughters, Brianna Payne, Heather Thompson, Brittany Payne, Amber Tapp, and Chastity Fowler; step-son, Michael Hammond; siblings Kevin cash and Kim Manning; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Payne will take place at 2:00 PM Friday- September 8, 2023 at the chapel of Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Lamar Russell and Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Garrett Cemetery with Zach McGuire, Levi McGuire, David Tapp, Chris Baggett, Michael Hammond and Matthew Tapp serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Baggett, Jack Baggett, and the staff of the Preparation Department of Mt. Vernon Mills.

The family will receive friends Friday, September 8 from 12:00 noon until the service hour.

Homecoming New Hope North Baptist Church Sunday September 10th.  Evangelist Ronald Guffey will be bringing the morning message and Chosen Generation from Fort Payne will be singing in the afternoon.  There will be lunch served after morning service there will be no PM service.

June Ione Ulsrud Zahn, Obit (M)

Mrs. June Ione Ulsrud Zahn, age 95, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, September 3, 2023, at her daughter’s residence in Woodstock, GA.

Mrs. Zahn was born June 20, 1928, in Minneapolis, MN, daughter of the late Chris Amil and Gladys Violet Winge Ulsrud. She was a homemaker and member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Zahn enjoyed playing cards with friends and cooking for people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Adolf Zahn; sons, Lee Johnson, Steven Zahn; daughters, Cheryl Johnson, Denise Zahn; sister, Joyce Resemius; brother, David Ulsrud; grandson, Richard Huen; and son-in-law, Brian Henning.

Survivors include her son, Daniel Zahn; daughters, Anita (James) Rice, Vanessa Henning, and Christine (Manuel) Garcia; a sister, Lynne Irwin; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, September 8, 2023, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Jody Brock officiating.

Tonya-Joan Marie Overbay, Obit (M)

Ms. Tonya-Joan Marie Overbay, age 41, of Trion, GA, died Thursday, August 31, 2023, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Ms. Overbay was born January 26, 1982, in Rome, GA, daughter of Wayne and Tina Marie Green McNeese.  She was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse with Advent Health Redmond.

Ms. Overbay was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Walter and Grace McNeese; and her maternal grandfather, Jimmy Green.

Survivors include her children, Julia Marie Wilson, Vanessa Perla Hernandez, and Jaxton Lee Overbay; parents, Wayne and Tina McNeese; sister, Mitzi McNeese; grandmother, Nancy Marie Green; and extended special family members, Danny and Myra Overbay, Jeremy Overbay, and DeAnna Sagram; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services for Ms. Overbay will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September 7, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Phil Minter and Rev. H.E. “Bubba” Cardin officiating.  Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Danny Overbay, Drew Jackson, Kelvin Sagram, Luke Overbay, Dalton Manning, and Justin Goodridge.  Honorary pallbearers will be Rachel Witt, Sonya Hughes, and Missy Johnson.

Ms. Overbay will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday.

In celebration of Tonya, the family asks that everyone wear turquoise for Tonya (i.e. jewelry, boots, accessories).  Everyone who knew Tonya knew about her love for all things turquoise and leopard print.

Sandra Lynette Carnes DeBerry, Obit (M)

Mrs. Sandra Lynette Carnes DeBerry, age 74, of Summerville, GA, died Friday, September 1, 2023, at Atrium Health Floyd.

Mrs. DeBerry was born May 21, 1949, in Trion, GA, daughter of the late Joseph Lonzo and Barbara Eugenia Patterson Carnes. She had attended Fellowship Baptist Church and was retired from the Chattooga County School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Eugene DeBerry; sons, Joseph LeBron DeBerry and Harold DeBerry, Jr.; and brothers, Bobby Carnes and Calvin Carnes.

Survivors include her son, Lamar (Larissa) DeBerry; a sister, Charlotte Maxson; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. DeBerry will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 4, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sanford DeBerry officiating. Interment will follow in Garrett Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lamar DeBerry, Alex DeBerry, Levi Thomas, Christopher DeBerry, Tobey DeBerry, and Chuck Powell.

Mrs. DeBerry will be in State at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 12 Noon until the hour of service on Monday.

Lyerly Pentecostal Tabernacle Benefit Singing Saturday September 9th

There will be a benefit singing at the Lyerly Pentecostal Tabernacle on Saturday September 9th at 6pm.  Saved By Grace and Joyful Sounds will be singing.  Proceeds from the singing will go to help with funeral expenses for Kevin Minard.

The pastor, Bobby Minard, invites everyone to attend.

Chattooga at Temple Football Tonight On WZQZ

Friday night football is back on the airwaves tonight here on WZQZ!  After a bye week last week, the Chattooga Indians will go on the road for the second straight time this season to Temple High School to take on the Temple Tigers.

Chattooga is 0-1 on the season after a 28-3 loss on the road at Lafayette two weeks ago.  Temple is 2-0 on the season with blowout wins over Pike County (57-6) and Christian Heritage (31-13).

Paul and Phil Cavin will call the action for Chattooga tonight with Price Wilson manning the video camera.  Join the WZQZ crew tonight at 7:15 pm for pregame with kickoff to follow at 730 pm.  The game will be live streamed on the WZQZ Facebook page and will also be broadcast on the radio on 99.1 FM and AM 1180.

The Trion Bulldogs have a bye week this week and will resume play next week on the road at Gordon Central.
