A thirty-five-year-old former Chattooga County Deputy was arrested this week on drug charges. Marvin Armstrong, a resident of Summerville who was currently serving as a Cave Spring, Georgia Police officer, was booked into the Floyd County Jail.
The Georgia Public Service Commission will be voting later this month on a requested 12% increase for Georgia Power customers.
The Summerville Christmas Parade will be held coming up tomorrow evening at 7 PM in downtown Summerville, but Christmas celebrations will continue in Summerville on Saturday and Sunday. Summerville’s Victorian Christmas will be held on December 3rd and 4th and will feature a street vendor market with over 23 craft and food vendors. Victorian era characters will be around downtown and there will be free kid’s stories and activities. A $500 drawing will be held during the event with no purchase necessary. A Summerville man was arrested this week for failing to register correctly as a sex offender. Sixty-seven-year-old John A. Dozier, Jr. was arrested on Tuesday of this week. According to the Georgia Sex Offender registry, Dozier was convicted of child molestation and aggravated sexual battery in 1995. Dozier’s last registered address was on Henderson Street in Summerville.
Due to the inclement weather on Tuesday evening, the Downtown Rome Christmas Parade was postponed until this evening. The Rome Christmas Parade will start at 6:30 PM. According to the Rome parade committee, this year’s event drew a record number of application entries, and that this year may be the biggest Christmas parade ever. Rome’s Christmas parade has continued to be one of the oldest and largest in Georgia and has delighted citizens of Rome and Northwest Georgia for over 60 years.
Several schools across the state received threats about an active shooter on Wednesday. The closest to Chattooga County was at Model High School in Rome and Cartersville High School. The threats all proved to be false and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp says that the FBI will be investigating the hoax and called the threats “acts of domestic terrorism”. Additionally, the GBI has said they will help the Floyd County Police Department and the Cartersville Police Department in their separate investigations into the threats. Kemp praised the Floyd County Police Department and Cartersville Police Department for their response to the calls.
The Summerville City Council voted to hire an interim city manager at their called council meeting on Monday of this week. Council members had previously stated that they would be taking applications for the interim city manager’s position through December 8th, but did an about-face and hired a new interim city manager this week instead of waiting on resumes from potential applicants.
