Approximately 70 million Americans will see a 8.7% increase in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2023. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January.
Summerville Main Street will host a Trains & Tracks Expo at the Historic Summerville Depot today and tomorrow at the historic Summerville Depot. Admission to the expo is free. A highlight for the event will be the Chattanooga Modular Modeler Train exhibit. The Chattanooga Modular Modelers, Inc. is a non-profit Tennessee corporation that uses the hobby of model railroading to educate the public about the role the railroads have played in our nation’s history. The Train Expo will also feature tables of trains, accessories, scale models, collectible toys, and Miniature Train Rides. There will be railroad memorabilia for sale, food and craft vendors, and special exhibits and demonstrations. Musical Entertainer Jaycee Lynne will be performing on the Depot front deck. Lynne performs a variety of music that includes contemporary, traditional country, and gospel music.
A Chattooga County man was arrested last week in neighboring Gordon County on drug charges. According to jail docket records from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, forty-five-year-old Brian Ladon Hampton of Summerville was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine. In addition, Hampton was charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement officers. Records indicate that Hampton was booked into the Gordon County Jail last Wednesday.

Georgia Power announced Thursday night that fuel load into the Vogtle Unit 3 reactor core has begun at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Ga. The fuel load process marks a historic and pivotal milestone toward startup and commercial operation of the first new nuclear units to be built in the U.S. in more than three decades.
The Justice Department announced that it has filed a lawsuit against Bartow County, Georgia, alleging that the County violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it subjected former employee Carlen Loyal to a racially hostile work environment, retaliated against former employee Bobby Turner, and fired both men, who are Black. Title VII is a federal statute that prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. Title VII also forbids employers from retaliating against employees for complaining about discrimination in the workplace or otherwise asserting their rights under Title VII.

Despite losing more than 17,000 trout in a Labor Day Weekend flood at its Summerville Trout Hatchery in Chattooga County, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resource Division (WRD) is making good on its promise that it will not let the near disaster affect trout stockings in 2023.
