With the City of Summerville’s cancellation of the Celebrate Independence festivities, Chattooga County residents will have to drive to LaFayette or Rome to see a professional fireworks display. That means there may be more folks setting off fireworks on their own this Fourth of July.

The Foundation at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) has awarded a $500 scholarship to one qualified student at each of the 26 high schools and five college and career academies in the northwest Georgia region. Two students at Trion High School received a scholarship of $250 each.
The Town of Trion Business Office, Gas Department, Recreation Department, and Maintenance Department will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of July 4th Holiday.
Garbage normally picked up on Friday will be picked up on Thursday, July 2nd. All other days will be on regular schedule.

The Summerville City Council is having another called meeting this evening to deal with the ongoing water crisis. The city council has been having meetings just about every week for the past month as the city grapples with solutions to the city’s water quality and the cost associated with a solution. Despite public outcries, the city has adopted a budget that will raise utility rates for the city’s water customers. Two council members, Dana Mosely and Joe Money voted against the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year Budget because of the rate increases. Summerville Police received a complaint about stolen plants last week. According to a report from the police department, a Union Street woman said that someone had stolen the plants off her porch. The woman told police that she believed the plants were stolen as retaliation for her calling animal control about her neighbor’s dogs. The woman said that she had to call about the animal problems multiple times. The responding officer took the report and said that it would be turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.
A small earthquake struck the area on Saturday morning. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 2.3 miles west of Menlo, just across the state line in Cherokee County, Alabama.
Chattooga County’s librarian with the county library system is retiring after twenty-seven years.
