Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods has announced his bid for reelection. Woods was elected in 2020 after former longtime Probate Judge Jon Payne had announced that he was retiring. Judge Payne subsequently passed away before the end of his term and Becky Duke was named to fill his term of office.
The former mayor of Rossville, Georgia in Walker County is accused of sexually harassing a female city employee. The Chattanooga Times-Free Press reports that former Mayor Teddy Harris was served a protective order after an investigation by the Rossville Police Department into the allegations. Harris is accused of making sexually suggestive remarks, taking multiple photos of the employee in the workplace and coming by her office on a regular basis. The employee alleges that the former mayor would ask her about her marriage and ask her about her sexual fantasies. Harris did not seek reelection and his last day in office was December 31, 2023. The protective order was granted by Walker County Superior Court and a full hearing on the matter is set for January 23rd.
Georgia’s elected legislators will be returning to the Gold Dome in Atlanta as the 2024 session of the Georgia General Assembly gets underway this week. Chattooga County is represented in the Georgia House by State Rep. Eddie Lumsden, a Republican from Armuchee and by State Sen. Colton Moore, a Republican from Dade County in the Georgia State Senate.

Work begins today to stabilize boulders on Dougherty Gap Road on Lookout Mountain. The road winds up the east side of the mountain and is used by residents in Walker and Chattooga Counties as a route to LaFayette.

A twenty-four-year-old Kennesaw man was arrested this past week after he was accused of stealing a car from a car dealership. According to reports, Judah Mark Johnson was arrested in Rome after he was accused of breaking into Sherald Salmon’s Auto Superstore and stealing a key to a Tesla from the store. Johnson then allegedly stole the car. He was also accused of breaking into a Dodge Challenger on the lot around 3 AM on December 29th. Johnson has been charged with second degree burglary, entering an automobile with the intent to commit a felony, theft by taking a motor vehicle, and entering an automobile with the intent to commit a theft.
Last week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced changes to Georgia’s statewide accountability system for schools – the College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) – to incentivize the adoption of high-demand Career Pathways in high schools. The CCRPI currently recognizes schools for the number of students completing a Career Pathway during high school.
