Early voting gets underway today for municipal elections in Trion, Summerville and Menlo. Lyerly has no contested races on the ballot and will not be holding an election this year. Early voting will continue until Friday, November 3, 2023. Election day will be the first Tuesday in November – November 7th.
There’s Hope For The Hungry will be distributing food at the South Summerville Baptist Church on Wednesday October 18th from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader released information about four men who were arrested in Chattooga County on child pornography charges as the result of an ongoing multi-agency investigation that involved the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI, Summerville and Trion Police and other law enforcement agencies in Northwest Georgia. Old Fashioned Day Sunday Dinner is coming to the historic Summerville Depot today. The City of Summerville will host the event with Sunday dinner served by Jim’s Restaurant from 11:30 AM until 2:30 PM. The cost is $7.25 for a meat and 2 vegetables or $6.45 for a 3 vegetable plate. Drinks will be $2 and dessert for $2.50. There will be indoor and outdoor seating and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Train will arrive at 1 PM. Live Bluegrass and Gospel music will be provided by Low Down Revival.
A thirty-three-year-old man is facing several charges after an incident at Ingles Supermarket in Summerville earlier this month on Thursday, October 5th. Benjamin Thomas Wilson was under the influence of alcohol at the time and is accused of jerking a vape that was hanging from a person’s neck inside the store. Wilson then reportedly attempted to stuff a bottle of wine down the front of his pants. Wilson then physically assaulted Ingles employees and resisted arrest. He was taken into custody by Summerville Police and was charged with theft by shoplifting, robbery by sudden snatching, public drunkenness and willful obstruction of law enforcement.
Many Georgia hunters eagerly await the opening day of firearms deer hunting season each year. Luckily, that wait is almost over as the statewide deer hunting firearms season opens Sat., Oct. 21 and continues through Jan. 14, 2024.
A forty-four-year-old Walker County woman has been charged with arson in Chattooga County. Julia Ledbetter Cotton reportedly admitted to setting fire to her former residence in Trion. The woman told investigators that she set fire to the house because her father had forced her to move from the home. Cotton is said to have started the fire at 34 Sunset Lane in Trion on Monday, September 25, 2023 around 9:30 in the evening. Cotton is charged with first-degree felony arson in connection with the incident.
Taivion James Rosser, 24 of Rome, was arrested this past week after reports said he robbed the Exxon service station on Rockmart Road at gunpoint.
The Georgia Department of Education released numbers this past week showing the high school graduation rate for county and city school systems across all 159 counties in the Peach State. Trion High School was at the top of the high schools in Northwest Georgia with a graduation rate of 98.7%. Chattooga High School posted a 90% graduation rate.
