The governing body for high school sports in Georgia approved a plan to separate public and private schools in postseason play starting in 2024-25.
The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Rossville. The Walker County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Sunday, Oct. 8. One man was shot and killed. One officer was injured.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Fields of Faith will be held on Wednesday November 1st at 6:30 pm at the Chattooga High School football stadium. The guest speaker for this year’s event is Michael Cook who serves as Discipleship Pastor at Dry Valley Baptist Church. Music will be led by CHS teacher Kelsey Ray.
The FCA Fields of Faith is a student-led event by both Chattooga High School and Trion High School FCA chapters. All churches and youth groups across the county are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

A fifty-nine-year-old man was found on lying on the parking lot at United Community Bank shortly after midnight last Thursday. A passing deputy pulled into the parking lot of the bank in Summerville and saw that Chester Robin Blackmon was asleep on the parking lot. The officer woke up Blackmon and could smell the odor of alcohol on Blackmon’s person. The deputy asked Blackmon how much he had to drink, to which Blackmon replied “two beers”. After a field-alcohol test, Blackmon was charged with public intoxication and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
A thirty-seven-year-old Marble Springs Road, Summerville man was arrested last week after Summerville police say that drugs were found in his possession. According to a report released yesterday, a Summerville officer observed a vehicle being driven by the subject shortly after midnight. The officer knew that the driver had a limited driving permit and was only to drive to work and under certain other limited conditions. When the officer pulled the vehicle over and spoke to the driver, the officer noticed an open container of alcohol and could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. After a voluntary consent to search, the officer found marijuana, methamphetamine and fentanyl. Jesse Lee Hayes was charged with open container of alcohol and drug violations and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The Tennessee Valley Railroad’s Summerville Steam Excursion is set to arrive at the historic Summerville Depot this Saturday and Sunday. Train arrivals and the turning of the antique steam engines are a highlight for rail fans of all ages. Tickets for these excursions are purchased through the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at www.tvrail.com . These vintage train rides follow a historic route from Grand Junction Station in Chattanooga to the Historic Summerville Depot. Summerville welcomes the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and its passengers by opening the historic depot to the public and with activities, entertainment, and events planned for each train arrival. Each event hosted is unique to itself.

Georgia’s annual ban on outdoor burning ended September 30 in 54 counties, primarily in the northern half of the state. From May 1 through the end of September, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division mandates the restrictions to protect air quality from emissions that may increase ground-level ozone.
