Property Assessment Appeals Continue To Flood Assessors Office

Chattooga County could be facing a real problem with tax assessment appeals climbing to nearly 2,000 property owners.  The deadline to appeal property taxes is tomorrow, and there are expected to be even more last-minute appeals filed before the end of the day.

Hot Weather Ahead For Chattooga County Fair Week

After several days of lower humidity – and lower temperatures, the temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90’s by the end of this week.  The last part of this past week, the area has been seeing temperatures in the mid to upper 80’s and overnight temperatures in the low 60’s.  For the next several days, the temperature is expected to climb in the low to mid 90’s and by the time the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair opens on Thursday, daytime highs will be in the upper 90’s and overnight temperatures will only be down in the 70’s.  On a positive note, there is no mention of rain the weather forecast from the National Weather Service from now until the coming weekend.

Unemployment Claims Down In Chattooga County

While most Northwest Georgia counties showed an increase in unemployment claims last month, Chattooga County’s initial unemployment claims went down. According to numbers released on Thursday of last week by the Georgia Department of Labor, unemployment claims were down in Chattooga County for the month of July.  In June of this year there were 215 claims.  The numbers decreased substantially to just 90 initial unemployment claims for the month of July.  That number is also lower than this time last year when 111 people filed first-time unemployment claims in Chattooga County.

New COVID-19 Variant Responsible For Most Cases

Chattooga County saw a big jump in the number of COVID-19 cases reported over the past several days, but health officials say that the current variant is usually not life-threatening and there are fewer hospitalizations, and even fewer deaths from COVID-19 statewide compared to this time last year.

Alabama Man Identified As Crash Victim

Authorities have identified a man who was killed in a two-vehicle wreck in Cave Spring Thursday as 21-year-old Gabriel Aguilar-Henandez of Alabama.  According to Deputy Floyd County Coroner John Hamilton, Aguilar-Henandez was pronounced dead at the scene at around 5 PM.  Aguilar-Henandez crashed a small pickup truck head-on into a tractor trailer on Highway 411.  The accident remains under investigation.

A former Georgia State Senator has been selected to head the state Republican Party.  At their convention last week, the new Republican Party chairman is promising to “fight back” against Democrats.
