The Chattooga Chamber has announced “Jump Start Mondays”. Each Monday morning, the Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce will bring breakfast by a Chamber member’s business. The Chamber says it is a way for the Chamber to get to know their members better. Jump Start Mondays will be held at businesses across the county. Summerville Police and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate the possible poisoning of an elderly woman this week. Family members reported that they believed the woman was given an overdose of potassium that lead to the woman’s hospitalization. Summerville Police responded to a Curran Street address to speak with family members who told them about the incident. The elderly woman was living in Trion, so Summerville Police are working with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation, which is ongoing. The woman was reportedly in ICU at a Rome hospital.

Enrollment is dropping at UGA’s College of Education. Officials say fewer students are choosing careers in teaching, leading to a 15-percent decline in enrollment. Eleven Alive reports that nationwide, the number of students earning degrees in education fell from 105,000 twenty-three-years ago to 85,00 in 2020. To make matters worse, a 2015 report by the Georgia Department of Education revealed that 44 % of public school teachers left the classrooms within the first five years on the job. Experts say the COVID-19 pandemic also magnified issues that many potential teachers already had, like wages.

A thirty-four-year-old woman was arrested on Friday of last week for loitering and prowling in Summerville. According to Summerville Police, Emily Elyse Broome was seen attempting to enter vehicles in the parking lot of the Summerville High Rise. She was then found inside an outbuilding on Ramey Street. Broome was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced that Georgia investors who purchased retail precious metals from Lear Capital will receive compensation as part of Lear Capital’s bankruptcy plan. The Secretary of State’s Securities Division was part of a multi-state effort investigating Lear for deceptive securities and commodities activities and misleading marketing at the time Lear Capital declared bankruptcy.
