Mrs. Barbara Ann Watkins, age 68 of Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024 at her residence.

Mrs. Watkins was born in Chickamauga, Georgia on August 21, 1956, daughter of the late Grover Young and Mary Edgeman Young. She was retired from Best Manufacturing and was of the Baptist Faith. Mrs Watkins was a Godly lady with strong faith. She loved working with flowers, shopping and interior decorating and was active in raising money for The Cancer Navigators and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by a daughter, Heather Watkins; and sisters, Betty Holcomb, Katheryn Abernathy and Carolyn Sue Young.

Mrs. Watkins is survived by her husband, Paul Watkins; sons, Brandon Watkins and Joe Watkins daughter, Mary Elizabeth Watkins; daughter-in-law, Brandi Watkins; sister, JoAnn Youngblood; nephews, Casey Youngblood and Corby Youngblood; grandchildren, Kara Watkins, Autumn Patterson, Rhegan Watkins and Dylan Watkins; God Children, Kelsey Weaver and Riley McElroy; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Watkins will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Sammy Barrett officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyerly Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Watkins, Corby Youngblood, Stacy Thrasher, Mike Dawson, John Wayne Tucker and Tracy Thrasher.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour.

Miss Andrea Melissa “Missy” Christopher, age 58 of Rome, formerly of Summerville, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 18, 2024 in at a Rome hospital.

Missy was born in Rome, Georgia on February 28, 1966, daughter of the late Freddie Lee Christopher and Gwendolyn Louise Daniel Christopher. She was a member of the Greater Grace Holiness Church and had been employed with Shaw Industries.

Missy is survived by a daughter, Brittany Christopher; grandson, Zorran Christopher; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fitz and Tammy Christopher, Kevin and Marquita Christopher and Raphael Watkins; close friends, Lois White, Dawanna Myrick, Kathy Dozier and Kenneth Covington; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

Funeral Services for Missy will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Fredrick Cowser officiating. Interment will follow in the Allgood Cemetery.

Stephen Anthony Pettyjohn, Obit (C)

Mr. Stephen Anthony Pettyjohn, age 72 of Summerville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 16, 2024 at his residence.

Mr. Pettyjohn was born in Summerville, Georgia on March 19, 1952, son of the late Robert Decatur Pettyjohn and Olivia Whitley Pettyjohn. He attended the West Berryton Faith Temple, served as a MP in the US Army, and was retired from the Tufting Department of Mohawk Industries. Mr. Pettyjohn was an avid music lover, enjoyed playing his guitar, and had been in several bands in his younger days. He enjoyed tinkering with lawnmowers and working on automobiles, enjoyed target practice and was at Jack’s every morning for breakfast. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pettyjohn was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Van Jacobs; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Carolyn Pettyjohn; and a brother-in-law, Ray Lee.

Mr. Pettyjohn is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Latricia Lee and Beverly and Michael Price; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment services for Mr. Pettyjohn will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. in the family plot of Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Rickey Biddle officiating.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Jack’s Breakfast Bunch, Tommy Stephenson, Phill Butler, Andy Wilson and David Gardner.

There will be no formal visitation, however the family will be available to greet family and friends following the committal service.

MRS. BARBARA JEAN HALL, age 91, of Hall’s Valley Road, Trion, Georgia, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 14, 2024, at her residence. Mrs. Hall was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on February 17, 1933 to the late Charles Franklin and May Bell Harris Williams. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ and a retired Teacher for Chattooga Headstart; in addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by several Siblings.

Surviving are Her husband, Fred Hall; daughters, Freda (Ken) Anderson, Brenda (Clifford) Snyder; and Kathy (Trent) Mercer; son, David (Pam Hall; Eight Grandchildren, Twelve Great Grandchildren, and One Great Great Granddaughter; sisters, Betty Huckabee and Alice Gunter; several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral and interment service will be held Monday at 1:00 P.M. from the Howell Cemetery with Minister Hugh Glaze officiating. The Family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

MR. DONNY H. SCOGGINS, age 81, of Ramey Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 14, 2024, at Atrium Health Floyd Chattooga, following a sudden event. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on February 22, 1943, a son of the late Benjamin Delaney and Rosell Maxey Scoggins. A member of the Subligna Baptist Church and for many years He owned and operated Scoggins Garage in Pennville. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by first wife, the late Eula Belle Scoggins on September 27, 2014 and a son the late Brent Scoggins on July 12, 2018, siblings, Edward Scoggins, Blanche Bean, Ruby Brewster, None Maxwell, and Carrie Ann Morrow all passed away earlier.

Surviving are wife, Carol Scoggins; son, Kevin (Sandra) Scoggins; step son, Kyle Parris; brother, Johnny (Eleanor) Scoggins; grandchildren, Terry & Brandi Eller and Nathan & Jennifer Thompson; great grandchildren, Alex Stewart, Logan Eller, Sara Thompson, and Addie Thompson; special niece, Beth Kellett; several Nieces and Nephews.

Vicki Lynette Smallan, Obit (M)

Ms. Vicki Lynette Smallan, age 74, of Lyerly, GA, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Atrium Health-Floyd.

Ms. Smallan was born December 8, 1949, in Trion, GA and was the cherished daughter of the late Archie Lonette Smallan and Venice Estelle White Smallan. She was a devoted sister to the late Barbara Edwards . Vicki’s greatest joy in life was her family.

Survivors include her sons, Barry (Connie) Bowman, Brian (Angie) Bowman; a sister, Peggy Johnston; grandchildren, Brad (Brandi) Bowman, Dalton (Mallory) Bowman, Branson (Ansley) Bowman, Bladyn Bowman, and Brystal Bowman; special friends, Sheila King and Gilda Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Throughout her life in Lyerly, Vicki built strong connections with her neighbors and friends always offering a helping hand. She will be remembered for her warm unwavering love for her family, and her gentle spirit. Vicki will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her memory will live through her children, grandchildren, and the many lives she touched.

MRS. MARGIE ORLENA PAYNE, age 97, of Neal Gap Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away at her residence Wednesday evening, September 11, 2024. She was born on January 24, 1927, in Tennessee, to the late James and Orlena Gibson Conner. Mrs. Payne was retired secretary for Pennville School; in addition to Parents was preceded in death by first husband, the late George William Payne and second husband, the late Thomas Broome, sister, the late Velma Jean Holland and half brother, the late James L. Payne.

Surviving are daughters, Amelia McCrickard and Rebecca Lynn Gable; sons, Larry William Payne and Bobby Payne; Seven Grandchildren, Eleven Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 14th, at 1:00 P.M. from the Pennville Church of Christ with Minister Robby Eversole and Minister Brad Hayes officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Ruth “Maxine” Dempsey Majors, age 75, of Menlo, GA, died Friday, September 13, 2024, at Atrium Health Floyd.
Mrs. Majors was born December 4, 1948, in the Alpine Community of Menlo, GA, daughter of the late Gladston “Datch” Dempsey and Annie Ruth Lawson Dempsey.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer for over 40 years. Prior to her retirement she was employed with the First National Bank of Chattooga County with more than 40 years of service. During her retirement, she actively worked at Menlo Elementary School as a teacher’s aide/substitute. Mrs. Majors was also an active member of the Menlo Lions Club for over 20 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dempsey; sister, O’Bera Keen; and a son-in-law, David Langston, Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Emmaus “Lee” Majors; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Patti Majors; daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Malcom Birge, Connie and Brent Bentley; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Dempsey; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Majors will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Quinn officiating. Interment will follow in Alpine Cemetery. Mr. Edwin Hughlon Tallent, age 78, of Summerville, GA, died Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Tallent was born October 9, 1945, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Toy Mae Tallent and Reba Nelma Aldridge Tallent. He was a veteran of the United States Army, and prior to his retirement, was employed as an electrician at Mount Vernon Mills. He had also previously been employed in the trucking industry.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tallent was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Tallent; and a sister, Janice Marrs.

Survivors include his son, Stacy Tallent; daughter, Alicia (Joe) Hudgins; brother, Danny (Connie) Tallent; sisters, Joan (Ron) Grunau, Vickie (Ahmad) Ghadamyari, and Anita (Burt) Burns; grandchildren, Dexter Lay, Colter Hudgins, and Reagan Tallent; and several nieces and nephews.

David G. Young, Obit (M)

Mr. David Glenn Young, age 67, of Summerville, GA, died Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Advent Health Redmond.

Mr. Young was born March 1, 1957, in Dalton, GA, son of the late James Arnold Young and Geraldine LaFavers Young. He was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, and prior to his retirement, was employed with both Floyd and Redmond EMS.

Mr. Young had been employed in public safety for 42 years where he touched many people’s lives through his line of work. He earned the Virginia D. Hamilton Special Achievement Award, the Heart of EMS Award, and the Paramedic of the Year Award. He had also previously served as the director of Floyd EMS. Mr. Young was an avid hunter, fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, and football fan.

Survivors include his wife, Melody Greer Young; his son, Hunter Young; and daughter, Autumn Young.

Funeral services for Mr. Young will be held at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at South Summerville Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Greer officiating. Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Alan Bryant, Leroy Luallen, Jeramy Penney, Danny Storey, Phillip Tucker, and Matt Pritchard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Lee Cline, Dr. James Michael Brown, Scotty Hancock, Steve Bates, Jerry Speer, Chris Shelley, the South Summerville Baptist Church congregation, and all public safety members of Northwest Georgia.
