W.A. Parker, Obit (M)

Mr. W.A. Parker, age 95 of Gaylesville, AL passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at his residence.

Mr. Parker was born July 7, 1929 in Cherokee County, AL to the late Will and Annie Roach Parker. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills, a member of the quarter century club, and was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Korea. Mr. Parker enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his son, Michael “Fuzz” Parker; and siblings, Ola Sprayberry, Faye Tallent, and Wallace Parker.

Survivors include his wife, Bettye Vaughn Parker; children, Tony Parker, Debbie (Ernie) Hester, Sheila (Donnie) Bullard; and Pam (Frog) Mason; sister, Vaudean Donovits; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside and interment services to celebrate the life of Mr. W.A. Parker will take place at 12:00 EST Friday, October 4 at AMI Cemetery with Min. Douglas Teague officiating. Active pallbearers will be Blake Bullard, Adam Hester, Kyle Bullard, and Derek Bullard. Honorary pallbearers will be Ernie Hester, Dan Bullard, Frog Mason, and Donnie Bullard.

There will be no visitation and anyone wishing to attend the service is requested to assemble at the cemetery.

Harold “Bud” Dempsey, Obit (M)

Mr. Harold Marnell “Bud” Dempsey, age 99, of Summerville, GA, died Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Oakview Health and Rehabilitation.

Mr. Dempsey was born September 11, 1925, in Menlo, GA, son of the late William Pink Dempsey and Annie Mae Willingham Dempsey. He was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church where he had previously served as a Sunday School Director and Choir Director. He was retired from Mount Vernon Mills where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Mr. Dempsey was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the European Theatre in World War II. He was also a member of the V.F.W.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Dempsey; brother, Tab Dempsey; sisters, Elsie Cooper and Helen Rich; and a grandson, Justin Butler.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Hamilton Dempsey; sons, Robert (Diane) Dempsey, Phil Butler; daughters, Nancy (Tommy) Hughes, Connie (Dennis) Bethune; a daughter-in-law, Jan Dempsey; 7 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, October 7, 2024, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Howell officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Chase Hughes, Cory Tanner, William Marfilius, Paul Dempsey, Joseph Jackson, and Kevin McCaffrey. Honorary pallbearers will be Daryl Broome as well as the staff of Oakview Health and Rehabilitation.

Mr. Dempsey will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Monday.

James Edward Carter, Obit (C)

Mr. James Edward Carter, age 86 of Trion, Georgia passed away Monday, October 1, 2024 at his residence.

Mr. Carter was born in Menlo, Georgia on October 1, 1938, son of the late George Hardy Carter and Emma Lee Key Carter. He was a graduate of the Menlo High School and had taken several courses in Mechanics at Coosa Valley Tech and Walker Tech. Mr. Carter was Baptist by faith and was retired from Valley Joist, where he was the Fleet Supervisor. He was a member of the Northwest Georgia Cruisers and enjoyed going to car shows. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Carter Powell, Jessie Carter Purcell and Faye Carter McWhorter; and a brother, Bill Carter.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Betty Carter; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Carter Watson and Quinton; sister, Gladys Carter Reese; brother and sister-in-law, Gene “Moose” and Judy Carter; grandchildren, Sandi Watson Glenn, Lee Glenn and Jeffery Watson; great grandchildren, Kaleigh and Garret Matis, Carter Lee Glenn, Nathan Glenn and James Watson; lifelong friend, Paul Purcell; caregivers, Hannah Johnson and Stephanie Dennis; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In accordance with Mr. Carter’s wishes, he will be cremated and the family may hold a memorial service at a later date.

Mrs. Opal Ruth Edwards Broyles age 91 of Trion, GA passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024 at her residence.

Mrs. Broyles was born November 24, 1932. She was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was famous for cooking her pineapple upside down cakes and cornbread. She also loved to garden and work in her flowers.

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Broyles; grandson, Wayne Simmons; step-son, Calvin Lee Broyles; and step-daughters, Brenda Lands & Veda Nell Simmons.

Survivors include her daughter, Willene (JD) Bryan; 1 brother; 11 grandchildren; and several great and great-great- grandchildren.

Graveside & interment services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Broyles will take place at 2:30 EST Wednesday, October 2 at Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (4183 County Road 59 Dutton, AL) with Bro. Daniel Wooten officiating. Pallbearers will be Dennis Lands, James Simmons, Jeremy Lands, Donnie Lee Treadaway, and Daniel Wooten.

MR. JOHN EDWARD MARMET, age 36, of Susie Lane, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday evening from injuries received in an auto accident. He was born in Rome, Georgia on August 24, 1988, a son of the late Charles Edward Marmet and Janice Edgeworth Marmet Prater, who survives. Mr. Marmet was a member of the Community Holiness Church and employed by Traeger Pelletts Company.

Surviving are He wife, Kourtney Marmet; mother and step father, Janice Marmet and Tony Prater; daughter, Jaycea Renea Marmet; son, Memphis Marmet; sister, Jennifer Suzanne Marmet; brother, Michael Marmet; aunts, Debbie Nance, Pat Corey, Barbara Marmet; cousins, Joie Nance and Nickie Corey.

Funeral and interment services will be held Monday, September 30th, at 2:00 P.M. from the Mount Olive Cemetery, at Cloudland, with Rev. Paul Bice officiating. Dylan Wade Ragan, Obit (ER)

MR. DYLAN WADE RAGAN, age 32, of Lyerly, Georgia went to his Heavenly home on Friday, September 27, 2024, with Family at his side. Dylan was born May 19, 1992, in Rome, Georgia, a member of the Berryton Baptist Church, was an avid Pokeman card collector, and years ago could be found outdoors shooting basketball for hours. Of late, His favorite passtime was creek bank fishing with friends. Dylan loved family, and looked forward to every holiday get together. He was preceded in dead by father, the late Thomas Wade Ragan and grandfathers the late Bobby Carnes and Joe Potter.

Dylan will be greatly missed by mother and step father, Kimberly and Eric Brown; brother, William Brown; grandmothers, Debbie Carnes, Kathryn Potter, and Judy Rogan; grandfather, Jerry Wade Ragan; uncles and aunts, Joey and Amanda Carnes, and Bob Carnes; several Cousins that adored Him; special friend, Chelsey Holt.

Caitlin Rae Baldwin, Obit (ER)

MS. CAITLIN RAE BALDWIN, age 32, of Hwy 337, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 26, 2024, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born in Rome, Georgia on August 29, 1992, was a member of the LaFayette United Methodist Church, and was in retail sales.

Surviving are parents, Max and Tari Baldwin; grandparents, Peggy Baldwin, William and Carol Proctor; fiancee’, Timothy Asbury; several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 29th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Randall Massengill officiating, entombment in Greenhills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 12 noon until 2:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Christine Elizabeth Leath, Obit (C)

Mrs. Christine Elizabeth Leath, age 92 of Summerville, Georgia formerly of Menlo, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Leath was born in Gaylesville, Alabama on August 21, 1932, daughter of the late Carl Atkins and Lula Belle McAteer Atkins. She was a member of the Menlo First Baptist Church and was retired from Best Mfg. Mrs. Leath enjoyed gardening and sewing, and it was a tradition for her to provide Sunday dinner for her children and grandchildren. She believed in putting God above all things and demonstrated this through how much she loved and cared for her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Leath was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Fletcher Leath; three sisters, Edith Wilson, Carrie Ann Simpson and Emma Sue Willingham; two brothers, Hugh Atkins and Hubert Atkins; and a son-in-law, Doc Hardin.

Mrs. Leath is survived by 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Veleta and Barry Brown, Anita Hardin, Rita and David Bierkamp and Reva and Gary Knowles; grandchildren, April(Todd) Browning, Jessica(Matthew) Smith, Mathew(Nicole) Bierkamp, Chad(Brittany) Bierkamp, Taylor Hardin, Cheyenne Hardin, Adam(Kayla) Knowles and Jennifer Knowles; great grandchildren, Will(Heather) Lamb, Ricky Lamb(Kaitlyn Alexander), Ansley Brown, Bailey Evans, Emma Evans, Caroline Bierkamp, Cooper Bierkamp, Owen Bierkamp, Remi Bierkamp, Caden Underwood and Harper Knowles; 9 great-great grandchildren; special nieces, Lisa Bullard and Julie Willingham; and a number of additional nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Leath will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Matthew Willingham officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mathew Bierkamp, Chad Bierkamp, Adam Knowles, Will Lamb, Braxton Lamb and Ricky Lamb.

Mr. Jimmy Joe Johnston, age 66, of Lindale, GA, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Floyd Medical Center.

Mr. Johnston was born February 22, 1958, in Rome, GA, the son of Mary Burke Norris and the late Joseph Alexander Johnston. He was a foreman for Beers Construction Company, a man of many trades, a traveler, a coin collector, and an avid story teller. He was married to Linda Hudgins Johnston, August 27, 1977, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father, one brother, one sister, and a granddaughter.

Survivors include, his mother, Mary Norris, son, Randy (Misty) Johnston, daughters, Karen (Shanon) Faircloth, Jennifer (Jeff) Ballard, brother, Stephen (Patricia) Johnston, sister, Angela (Bobby) Goodson, 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and his extended family at Dixie Fuel.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 27, 2024, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Nathan Roberts and Pastor Steven Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow in Lyerly Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jacob Ballard, Chris Youngblood, Thomas Peteck, Rusty Frost, Joe Hudgins, Jey Eaton, and Chris Farrer. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Mrs. Vicki Elaine Moss, , age 72 of Menlo, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024 in a Rome hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Vicki was born in Trion, Georgia on March 3, 1952, daughter of the late JC Boyd and Marie Hughes Boyd. She was retired from the Mohawk Industries, where she was employed as a Lab Analyst. She loved going to yard sales, antiquing, and spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, Avrie and her fur baby, Lucy. In addition to her parents, Vicki was preceded in death by sisters, Sandra Davis, Gale Holland and Alice Boyd; and a brother, Larry Boyd.

Vicki is survived by her husband, Donnie Moss; son and daughter-in-law, Dustin and Jessica Moss; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and DC Shrader; granddaughter, Avrie Moss; bonus granddaughter, Stella Morrison; and a number of special nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment Services for Vicki will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. in the Green Hills Memory Gardens with Mr. Jacob Shrader officiating.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Hollis, Brad Bowman, Riley Johnson, Jacob Shrader, Todd Shrader and Brandon Johnson.
