Mrs. Annie Jo Courtney

Mrs. Annie Jo Courtney, age 77, of LaFayette, GA went to be with the Lord on May 27, 2009. Mrs Courtney was born May 24, 1932 in Chickamauga, GA, the daughter of the late James Kyler and Margie Lee Purcell Lively. 

She was a retired Secretary for the Department of the Army. Mrs. Courtney was preceded in death by a son, Tommy D. Courtney, SGM (RET U. S.Army) two brothers, James Louise Lively and Robert Clinton Lively, and a sister, Edna Lee Lively. She was a member of the Fairview South Baptist Church. 

Survivors are her beloved husband, Robert D. "Mickey" Courtney, (RET U. S. Army), to whom she was married for 57 years, son & daughter-in-law, Keith & Kim Courtney, Stephens City, VA, sister & brother-in-law, Peggy & Bill Elsberry, Summerville, GA; daughter-in-law, Lily McHatton, Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Steven Courtney, Jonathan Courtney and wife, Eva Courtney, Michele & Jimmy Cribb, and Jessica Rossi; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Katie, and Joshua Cribb, Alexandra and Samuel Courtney; nephews, Eddie Lively, Jason Dixson and Michael Bradley, and great nieces, Kayla and Alyse Dixson. 

Funeral services will be held at  Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lowell Cantrell, Rev. Ricky Biddle, Rev. Mickey Skates and Rev. Malcolm Harris officiating. Burial will follow in LaFayette Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Steven Courtney, Jonathan Courtney, Jason Dixson, Michael Bradley, Steve Palmer and Steve Sizemore. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenda Hamilton, Flora Webb, Margie Purcell, Ruthie Groce, and the Women of Fairview South Baptist Church.

“Freddy” McDonald Obit

Mr. Fred Thomas "Freddy" McDonald, age 71, of Centre, AL died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Floyd Medical Center.Mr. McDonald was born August 23, 1937 in Cherokee County, AL the son of the late Jim McDonald and Grace Warren McDonald. He was retired from Defender Cleaning Service.

 Other than his parents, Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Elrod McDonald, daughter, Shelia Mobbs; sister, Ruth Carter; brothers, Kenneth McDonald, Ralph McDonald, and Gary McDonald.

Survivors include his children, James Eugene McDonald, Deborah Nixon, and Vickie Rich; sisters, Helen Cranmore, Martha Jo Drake, and Becky Brown; brothers, Robert McDonald and Ronnie McDonald; 12 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; and 1 Great Great Grandchild.

Dorothy H. Lunsford obit

Mrs. Dorothy Harlow Lunsford, age 88, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 in Reidsville, GA.  She was the daughter of the late Robert and Minnie Vanpelt Harlow.  Her husband, Everett P. Lunsford, Sr. preceded her in death.

 

Mrs. Lunsford was born in Chattooga County on May 20, 1921.  She is survived by a son, Everett P. Lunsford, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Miriam L. Lynn, son-in-law, Dr, Steve Lynn; granddaughter, Beth Lynn of Reidsville, GA; and sister and brother-in-law, Mr. Mrs. Melvin Brooks of Griffin, GA.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

After graduating from Tift College in Forsyth, GA in 1942, Mrs. Lunsford taught school in the Rome City School System; Trion City School System and Chattooga County School System.  She retired after more than 30 years and became the director of the Adult Education Program at the Parent-Child Center and the Chattooga County Library.  She loved teaching and helping others in any way she could.  Her greatest delight was in helping students attain their GED.

 

Since 1932, she was an active member of the Summerville First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school in the children and adult departments.  She was a member of the Joy Club and Women’s Missionary Circle. Mrs. Lunsford was a former member of the Chattooga County Library Board; a trustee of Camp Juliet Low in Cloudland, GA; a trustee of the Summerville Cemetery Association, and a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association.

 

Visitation will be held at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, GA on Saturday, May 30, 2009, from 12noon until 2pm.  A graveside service and interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Lacy, age 83, of Shady Lane, Trion, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Mrs. Lacy was born February 2, 1926 in Marion County AL.  She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.Mrs. Lacy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank and Dolphia Homer Evans; sisters, Nellie Parris Crider, Olene Duke and Flora Hammond; brothers, Lee Evans and Brice Evans.Mrs. Lacy is survived by her husband, Dallas Lacy; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Raymond Giles of Summerville; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Mike and Dawn Giles of Villanow, GA; brother, Bryan Evans of Summerville, GA; sister-in-law, Maughee Evans of Trion, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Lacy will be conducted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11:00am from the chapel of Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home with her former pastor, Rev. Mrs. Ruby E. Campbell obit

Ruby Ersell Campbell, 94, of 72 Kimberly Drive, NW, Cartersville, GA, formerly of Trion, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, in Cartersville.  She was born September 6, 1914 in Polk County, GA, daughter of the late William and Ida Bell Agans Jacob. 

 She was retired from Mt. Vernon Reigel Textile and was Church of God.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Campbell; a daughter, Frances Freeman; two sons, Tracy and Larry Campbell; grandson, Rob Campbell; daughter-in-law, Sandy Campbell.

 

Survivors include: daughter, Ida Campbell, Ringgold, GA; 3 sons and daughters-in-laws, Hoyt and Bernice Campbell, Cartersville; Dennis and Nelda Campbell, Kodak, TN; Roy Campbell, Davenport, FL; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 25, 2009, at 11:00am from the chapel of the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Hibberts officiating.  Interment was in West Hill Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were grandsons.

 

The family received friends Sunday, May 24, from 6 until 9pm.

Mr. Roger Wade Cox, age 71, of Summerville, GA died Monday, May 25, 2009 at RedmondRegional Medical Center. Mr. Cox was born November 22, 1937 in Dripping Springs, Arkansas, the son of the late RaymondBertie Cox and Thelma Lee Rogers Cox. He was retired from Collin Pine Lumber Company wherehe was employed for 36 years.  Mr. Cox was a member of Horizon Baptist Fellowship and was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Cox was very active in the Little League Baseball Program for over 20 years and he had also played semi-pro baseball for the Pittsburg Pirates organization. Survivors include his wife of 49, years, Clytie Sue Cox; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen &Michelle Cox, Ehrenburg, AZ, Michael & Sheila Cox, Summerville, GA, and Thomas Ray andChristi Cox, Westwood, CA; sister, Wilda Haws, Redding, CA, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law,Donna a & Al Griego, Livermore, CA and Lynn and Woody Fortner, Indiana; 13 Grandchildren;a number of Nieces and Nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Mr. Merion McKenzie, age 82, of Trion, GA, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, in a Rome health care facility.  Mr. McKenzie was born in Chattooga County GA, the son of the late Taylor McKenzie and Mary Smallwood McKenzie.  Mr. McKenzie worked for many years at Mt.
