Chattooga County voters delivered decisive Republican victories in both of Tuesday’s special election runoff races, with Clay Fuller winning the U.S. House District 14 contest and Lanny Thomas capturing the Georgia State Senate District 53 seat. Official Georgia results show Fuller won Chattooga County with 2,546 votes, or 69.81 percent, compared to 1,101 votes, or 30.19 percent, for Democrat Shawn Harris. In the Senate race, Thomas defeated John Bentley “Jack” Zibluk with 2,686 votes, or 74.38 percent, to 925 votes, or 25.62 percent.
In the 14th District runoff, Fuller carried every publicly reported Chattooga County precinct. In Lyerly, Fuller received 285 votes to Harris’s 121. In Menlo, it was 295 to 127. In Summerville, Fuller won 791 to 490. In Trion, Fuller posted one of his strongest showings with 835 votes to Harris’s 256. In Gore, Fuller won 340 to 107. The strongest Republican percentages came from Trion and Gore, while Harris turned in his best percentage in Summerville.
In the State Senate District 53 runoff, Thomas also swept every publicly reported Chattooga County precinct. In Lyerly, Thomas won 311 to 91. In Menlo, he carried the precinct 311 to 109. In Summerville, Thomas won 858 to 403. In Trion, the former mayor dominated with 853 votes to Zibluk’s 225. In Gore, Thomas won 353 to 97. Thomas’s strongest percentage came in Trion, while Zibluk’s best showing was in Summerville, though he still trailed by a wide margin.
Thomas’s hometown ties in Trion appeared to boost his support there, while Fuller’s margins underscored Chattooga County’s continued Republican strength in federal races.
