Lanny Thomas Sworn In To Serve Georgia Senate District 53

Lanny Thomas was officially sworn in Thursday to serve in the Georgia State Senate representing District 53.

Thomas called it a special day for his family and for Northwest Georgia, saying it is an honor he does not take lightly.

In a statement following the ceremony, Thomas said District 53 now has strong leadership and a voice at the Capitol. He thanked supporters, family, and friends who joined him in Atlanta, and said he is ready to represent all residents, including families, workers, small businesses, and local communities.

Thomas also reminded voters that another election is coming up on May 19th, encouraging residents to make a plan to vote as he seeks to continue serving in the next term.

He said the goal moving forward is to keep Northwest Georgia moving forward together.

Chattooga County Delivers Strong Republican Wins In Both Runoff Races

Chattooga County voters delivered decisive Republican victories in both of Tuesday’s special election runoff races, with Clay Fuller winning the U.S. House District 14 contest and Lanny Thomas capturing the Georgia State Senate District 53 seat. Official Georgia results show Fuller won Chattooga County with 2,546 votes, or 69.81 percent, compared to 1,101 votes, or 30.19 percent, for Democrat Shawn Harris. In the Senate race, Thomas defeated John Bentley “Jack” Zibluk with 2,686 votes, or 74.38 percent, to 925 votes, or 25.62 percent.

Early Voting for Special Election Runoff Starts Today

Advance Voting for the April 7, 2026 Special Election Runoff to fill the unexpired terms of Marjorie Taylor Greene (US House of Representatives, District 14) and Colton More (State Senate, District 53) will begin today, Monday, March 30, 2026 at 8:30 AM and end at 5 PM on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Daily hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. All Advance Voting will take place at the Chattooga County Registrars Office located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville.
On Election Day, April 7, 2026, the polls are open from 7 AM – 7 PM. All Election Day voting takes place at the assigned polling locations, not the Registrars Office. Polling places in Chattooga County include: Gore Fire Hall, Lyerly Community Center,  old Menlo City Hall, Chattooga County Civic Center and the Trion Recreation Department.
Government issued photo ID is required. The registration deadline for this election was March 9, 2026.

Lanny Thomas, Republican candidate for Georgia State Senate District 53 and former mayor of the Town of Trion, has undergone emergency surgery after what his family described as a sudden and unexpected medical emergency. He is currently recovering in the hospital.

A statement released by the Thomas family says prayers and well wishes are appreciated as he continues his recovery. Before surgery, Thomas spoke with his family and expressed his determination to return to the campaign as soon as possible.

The statement says he remains committed to serving Northwest Georgia and providing honest and effective representation. Updates on his condition are expected to be shared as they become available.

Thomas, along with Democrat Jack Zibluck are on the ballot in a runoff election for State Senate District 53 on April 7.
