Summer is showing no signs of giving way to fall just yet, with another stretch of hot, mostly sunny and predominantly dry weather expected across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia this week.

The National Weather Service says sunshine will dominate today, with the afternoon high climbing to around 94 degrees. Humidity will make it feel even hotter, with heat index values approaching 99 degrees during the afternoon.

An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible across far North Georgia this afternoon as a weak cold front brushes the region. However, forecasters say most areas will remain dry, and any rain that does develop should be isolated.

Winds will remain light, becoming northeast at around 5 mph this afternoon.

Tonight will be mostly clear and warm, with temperatures falling to around 71 degrees.

The heat continues Tuesday. Skies will again be mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees, while the heat index could once again approach 99. Southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph are expected, with occasional gusts as high as 15 mph. Tuesday night will be clear with a low around 69.

A weak wedge of slightly cooler and drier air will move into the region Tuesday into Wednesday, but it will provide little relief from the afternoon heat. The biggest difference should be somewhat lower humidity by Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 93, followed by a mostly clear night with a low around 67 degrees. Thursday will be sunny and hot with a high near 94, while Thursday night drops back to around 67.

There is little change heading into the weekend. Friday and Saturday are both expected to be sunny with afternoon highs around 94 degrees. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 60s.

The persistent heat is being driven by high pressure and an upper-level ridge over much of the Southeast, which will also keep meaningful rain chances very low. Forecast guidance indicates rain chances will generally remain at 20 percent or less for much of the week.

By Sunday, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, but sunshine is still expected for much of the day with a high around 92 degrees.

While afternoon temperatures will remain well above 90 throughout the week, slightly lower dewpoints Wednesday and Thursday should make early mornings and evenings somewhat more comfortable.

For mid-September, however, the overall message is simple: hot weather continues, widespread rainfall remains unlikely, and there is little indication of a significant fall cool-down during the next several days.
