Keep the umbrella handy across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia today as a weather system brings widespread rain showers with occasional thunderstorms. The steadiest rain is expected through the daytime hours, and while the more significant severe weather threat is aimed farther south in Georgia, brief heavier downpours and isolated lightning are still possible locally at times.
A cold front will sweep through late tonight, pushing the rain out of the area and bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures. Behind the front, winds will increase, and Sunday is expected to feel cooler and blustery across Northwest Georgia. Gusty northwest winds may make it feel colder than the actual air temperature, especially in open areas and higher elevations.
Once the front clears the region, the pattern turns cold and dry for Monday and Tuesday. That combination of lingering breezes, low humidity, and sunshine will help dry out fine fuels such as leaves and grass. Because of that, fire danger concerns may increase early in the week, particularly on Tuesday if humidity levels drop and winds remain elevated. Even with chilly temperatures, dry air and wind can allow fires to start and spread more quickly than many people expect.
Looking ahead, rain chances are expected to return Thursday into Friday as another system approaches, though uncertainty remains regarding the exact timing and overall impacts.
