Another hot and unsettled day is expected across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia today, but a significant change toward more seasonable late-September weather is on the way.

The National Weather Service says today will be partly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 PM. The high will be near 90 degrees, with calm winds.

North Georgia is under a Marginal Risk, Level 1 of 5, for severe thunderstorms today. Forecasters say the strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts, with heavy rainfall also possible. Storms will generally move slowly, which could result in locally heavy rainfall where repeated storms develop.

The severe weather threat comes one day after thunderstorms caused significant storm damage in portions of Chattooga County Monday evening, particularly around Trion.

Tonight brings a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 PM, with a low near 68.

A noticeable weather change begins Wednesday as cooler air pushes into North Georgia. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely Wednesday afternoon, with a 60 percent chance of rain and a high near 84.

By Thursday, temperatures should fall closer to normal for late September. Thursday’s high will be around 80, followed by mostly sunny and dry conditions Friday through the weekend. Overnight lows could fall into the upper 50s, including around 57 Friday night and 56 Saturday night.

The weekend currently looks pleasant, with sunshine and a high near 81 Saturday and mostly sunny skies with a high near 83 Sunday.
