One of the biggest events of the spring gets underway today in Rome as the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show returns to Russell Regional Airport for a two-day run.

The show begins this afternoon and continues through Saturday, bringing thousands of visitors to Floyd County for a weekend filled with military demonstrations, civilian aerial performances, and family-friendly entertainment. Headlining this year’s event are the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, one of the nation’s most recognized flight demonstration teams.

Today’s opening day features an afternoon and evening schedule, with gates opening at 1:00 p.m. Opening ceremonies are set for 3:15 p.m., followed by a Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team demonstration and an F-15 Eagle demo before the Thunderbirds take to the skies later in the afternoon.

After an intermission, the event shifts into a sunset, twilight, and night show format, giving spectators a full evening of aerial and ground performances. The Friday program is also set to include a drone show and a fireworks finale, making tonight’s lineup one of the biggest draws of the weekend.

The event continues Saturday with a full daytime schedule. Gates open at 9:00 a.m., with opening ceremonies at noon and additional performances leading up to another Thunderbirds demonstration in the afternoon.

Organizers say the air show will feature a mix of military aircraft, jet teams, and civilian performers, making it a major attraction not only for aviation fans but also for families looking for a high-profile regional event. The show has become one of the most anticipated annual events in Northwest Georgia and is expected to bring a strong economic boost to the Rome area through tourism, lodging, dining, and local shopping.

Officials are also reminding attendees that tickets must be purchased in advance. The event is being held at Russell Regional Airport in Rome, and traffic is expected to be heavy around the venue as crowds arrive for the opening day festivities.
