William Carpenter Obit

Mr. William Gregory Carpenter, age 51, of Menlo. GA., passed away Saturday August 16, 2008, in Redmond Regional Medical Center. Mr. Carpenter was born September 22, 1956, in Trion, GA., the son of the late William (Bill) Carpenter and Martha Wilson Carpenter. He was employed with J.P. Smith Lumber Company, A member of the Spring Creek Baptist Church, was the teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class of Spring Creek Baptist Church, Big Chief of the “Thunder Riders”, and preceded in death by a son, Shawn Harris, and a brother, Rodney Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Grogan Carpenter, sons and daughter-in-law, Britt and Alania Carpenter, Trion, GA, Zack Carpenter, Menlo, GA., daughters and son-law, Faedra and Jeremy Rogers, Summerville, GA., Jesse Harris, Trion, GA, mother, Martha Wilson Carpenter, Trion, GA., sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Willie Blackmon, Summerville, GA., 8 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 4:00 p.m. Monday August 18, 2008, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Derek Hall, and Rev. Billy Dempsey officiating with interment in the Spring Creek Cemetery. Active pallbearers, Jeremy Croy, Joey Brewster, Joe Dodd, Tommy Busbin,Dewey Brewster, Danny Powell. Honorary pallbearers, Employee’s of J.P. Smith Lumber Company, the Adult Sunday School Class of Spring Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Carpenter will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home Chapel and the family will receive friends Sunday August 17, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Menlo Election Qualifying Next Week

The City of Menlo has announced qualifying for candidates seeking city council seats in the November election.  Seats 3, 4 and 5 are open for qualification beginning Tuesday August 26th and running throuh Friday August 29th.  Qualification fees are $9.00.  The election for Menlo City Council will be held during the General Election November 4th.

 

Body Found at Sloppy Floyd Park – Suicide

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s department has confirmed that a body found at Sloppy Floyd State Park in Chattooga County last week was that of a suicide victim.  Law enforement officials were called to the scene late last week when the body was discovered.

 

Water off in Trion this Wednesday

The Town of Trion has scheduled water service to be off temporarily this Wednesday August 20th beggininng at 7 AM as town water officials tie into a new water main.  It is not clear how long service will be interrupted.  All areas except those on 9th, 10th and 11th Streets along with Club Drive will be affected.

Chickamauga 145th Battle Anniversery

The re-enactment of the Battle of Chickamauga, scheduled for Sept. 19-21 at the Andrews Farm outside Chickamauga, is expected to bring thousands of re-enactors, sutlers and tourists to Walker County.  Activites to commemerate the battle will take place in LaFayette on Friday September 19th from 2-5 PM.  One of the events includes a production by Hope Productions commemerating events surrounding the Trion Factory during the War Between the States.  There will also be a production about General Braxton Bragg’s planning of the battle at the Chattooga Academy, also known as John B. Gordon Hall.

About 120,000 soldiers fought in the two-day battle in 1863. With more than 35,000 casualties, the Battle of Chickamauga is considered one of the bloodiest in the Civil War.

Young Child Drowns in Floyd County

Floyd County emergency services were called to the scene of a drowning on Sunday evening.  According to reports a four year old child drowned while swimming with his family in Silver Creek off of Darlington Drive and U.S. Highway 27 near the sight of an old furnace.

According to reports a family with small children were swimming in the area which is around 3-5 foot deep and the father noticed that the young toddler did not come up after going under the water.  The area is accessible only by a foot path.  A wittness flagged down traffic on Darlington Drive but by the time paramedics and law enforcement officials arrived it was too late to revive the child.

Georgia Residents Arrested in Alabama

Two Georgia residents were arrested in Cherokee County Alabama over the weekend on separate incidents.  Listed as arrested by the Cherokee County Alabama Sheriff’s Department were Lucky Gilbreath, Jr., age 60 of LaFayette on DUI charges.  Also, 36 year old Cecil Scott Evans of Lyerly was charged with non – support.

 

Arrest in Court House Bomb Threat

Chattooga County Sheriff Ralph Kellett told AM 1180 Radio News yesterday evening, that an arrest has been made in a bomb threat incident that happened Friday morning during Superior Court.  A telephone call was made to the sheriff’s office stating there was a bomb in the courthouse.

Carrie Michelle Weeks, age 18 of Rains Circle in Summerville, was arrested Friday afternoon by investigator Eddie Strop of the Chattooga County Sheriff’s office.  Ms. Weeks was charged with transmitting a false bomb threat, terroristic threats and acts and use of a communication facility to commit a crime, all felonies.  Bond has been set for Weeks at $300,000 cash.

Sheriff Kellett told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio News that he expects another person to be charged after further investigation. 

The Courthouse was evacuated at approximately 10 AM Friday morning without incident.  A search was conducted by numerous county and City of Summerville law enforcement along with the Summerville Fire Department and Hays Correctional Fire Department.  The GBI assisted in the search as well.  Nothing was found at the court house, which remained closed until 1 PM when it was re-opened and court resumed.

Bramlett Obit

Mrs. Lorene Bramlett, age 70, of Wayside Community in Summerville, passed away Friday moring in a Rome hospital. she was born in Marshall County, Alabama on April 20, 1938 to the late John Franklin and Martha Ray Lankford. Mrs. bramlett was a member of Wayside Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a son, the  late Danny Pettyjohn; great grandsons – the late Aaron Hines and Carmon Clark; sisters – the late Bertha Sprayberry, Patsy Lowrance, and Shirley Hampton.

Surviving are her husband, Liborn Bramlett; daughter – Debra Bailey, of Trion; sons – Walter Clark, of laFayette and Allen Clark, of Summerville; sister – Helen Green, of LaFayette; brothers – Tommy Lankford, of Chickamauga, and Bobby Lankford, of LaFayette; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 17th, at 2:00 PM from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastors Joel Smith, Barry Brown, and Jackie Buckhannon officiating, with interment in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Timmy Lankford, Jackie Lankford, Michael Lankford, Jeremy York, Walter Clark, and Cajun Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Banks, John McGraw, Tony Prince, Mark Tidmore, and Chris Hardin. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, August 16th, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM. At other hours, they will be at the residence.
