In Friday night’s basketball action the Chattooga Indians took on the Pepperell Dragons. The CHS boys varsity team was the only one to pull out a win against the Draggons with a score of 71 to 68. The number 37 seemed to be unlucky for three of the four CHS teams last night. The varsity girls fell to the lady Dragons with a score of 61 to 37. the jv boys lost with a score of 41 to 37 and the jv girls lost with a score of 44 to 37. The Indians will take on Sonoraville Tuesday, January 13 at Sonoraville.
A structrue fire was reported shortly before 6am on Memorial Drive. Summerville, Trion and Hays Fire Departments were called to the scene. AM 1180 will have more details as they become available.
Georgia lawmakers got some bleak fiscal news as they prepare to open their legislative session next week.
State money managers reported Friday the tax collections plummeted for December. Revenues were down 8.9 percent compared to the same month the year before. For the fiscal year that began July 1, tax collections are down 2.7 percent.
Gov. Sonny Perdue has already ordered most state agencies to cut spending by 8 percent to make up a deficit expected to top $2 billion. The bad news in December could mean those cuts may have to go even deeper.

Goody’s stores in LaFayette and Fort Oglethorpe will close, but it isn’t clear when that will happen.
Managers at the LaFayette store on U.S. 27 and the Fort Oglethorpe store on Battlefield Parkway on Friday said that they could not comment. An employee at one of the local stores said that it could be up to 15 months.
On Friday, the Goody’s Family Clothing chain began the process of liquidating 287 stores nationwide.
In June Goody’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began the process of shuttering more than 60 stores, including three in Chattanooga.
The Chattanooga stores that have been closed were on Gunbarrel Road in East Brainerd, at Eastgate Town Center on Brainerd Road, and on Tenn. 153 in Hixson.
Goody’s is a family business that was started in Athens, Tenn., and eventually branched out to almost 400 stores, until the family sold the chain in 2006.

Police are investigating robbery that occurred at Gold-n-Locks on Shorter Avenue on Friday.
According to Charles Young, who works at the store, a black male dressed in a black jacket, black pants, and a black hat came in with scrap gold to sell. When Young got the money bag to pay the man, the robber snatched the bag and made a break for the back door.
Young said the man did not have a weapon.
A woman who was sitting on a couch tripped the man and he fell into a cabinet. Young said he was able to get his hands on the robber, but that he could not hold him down.
“Young said his hand was scratched, but no one was seriously injured. The cabinet was damaged during the struggle. Police are searching for the suspect in the area between Shorter Avenue and Martha Berry Boulevard at this time.
This is the second robbery in the area in less than 24 hours. A robber of similar description took money at gunpoint at Buffalo’s Southwest Cafe on Shorter Avenue Thursday night. A man was shot in the leg during the commission of that crime.
An employee at Buffalo’s said Friday morning that the restaurant manager was shot. He went to the hospital in a private vehicle and was treated and released. The employee said he has not badly injured.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel were dispatched to Stateline Road in Cloudland this afternoon around 2:30 PM due to a one vehicle traffic accident. The accident occurred in the "S-curves" known as "Double Holler Hill" on Stateline Road. The accident involved a Chevrolet Pickup truck, Apparently the female driver lost control of the vehicle in the curve, while she did sustain minor injuries she was not transported to the hospital by EMS. The Menlo and Cloudland Fire Departments along with the Georgia State Patrol responded to the accident.

The heavy rains earlier this week produced flooding all over the county. The Chattooga River reached a measure of 16.89 feet on Wednesday evening. Anything over 14 feet is considered to be flood stage. At 6:15 this morning the Chattooga River was at 6.5 feet, well below flood stage.
Official reports indicate that the area received over 7 inches of rain fall this week. The Southeast Regional Climate Center is reporting that Chattooga County is now listed as "Abnormally Dry" as far as drought conditions, which is a substantial improvement from the drought conditions we have experienced over the past 16 months when the area was in a "Severe Drought".
A report released yesterday by the National Center for Education Statistics finds that 19% of Chattooga County Adults lack basic literacy skills. Nationally the figure is around 14.5% of adults that lack Basic English literacy skills. The data is gathered every 10 years to estimate the number of adults lacking Basic English skills. Other counties in our area are as follows: Floyd County, 17%, Bartow County 13%, Gordon County 19%, Polk County 22%, Catoosa County 12%, Walker County 15%, Cherokee County, Alabama 16%, and DeKalb County, AL 18%.
