Speeding Stop Turns Into DUI Charge

A sixty-seven-year-old man was charged with driving under the influence after he was seen speeding on Highway 27.  According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy clocked the man driving 78 mph on Highway 27 coming into Summerville.  The deputy performed a traffic stop inside the city limits and called for assistance from Summerville Police.  The driver admitted to the deputy that he had a “shot of bourbon” before he left Rockmart.  Joel Edward Ozment was charged with DUI for alcohol, speeding, no proof of insurance and failure to change license within 60 days of moving.  He was booked into the Chattooga County Jail on the charges last Friday.

NWTF Georgia Commits Over $315,000 To Mission Delivery for 2024

The Georgia State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation recently met to allocate funding for 2024 mission-delivery projects in the Peach State. After the reviewing and ranking process, the NWTF Georgia State Chapter budgeted $162,883 for 18 wild turkey habitat projects, $33,815 for wildlife law enforcement equipment, $43,000 for outreach and education programs and $67,275 for conservation land acquisition, along with a $10,000 commitment to be used across the 18-state region for the NWTF’s new Habitat for the Hatch Initiative.

Knowing the fundamental importance of early literacy and students’ ability to read proficiently by third grade, the Georgia Department of Education is recognizing schools with exceptional achievement or growth in third-grade reading as 2022-2023 Literacy Leaders.  Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer said on Tuesday that Leroy Massey Elementary and Lyerly Elementary were chosen as Literacy Leaders because 15% or more of their 3rd grade students showed growth from 2021-22 to 2022-23 on the Milestones.

There’s Hope For The Hungry will be at South Summerville Baptist Church on Wednesday September 20th. They will be distributing food from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
