The Chattooga County Animal Shelter is encouraging residents to consider opening their homes to a shelter pet.
A free animal vaccine and microchipping clinic is happening today, Friday, May 1, for dogs and cats in Chattooga County.
The event will be held from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM at Tractor Supply, 11788 Highway 27 in Summerville.
The clinic is sponsored by the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia in partnership with the Chattooga County Animal Shelter. Services include rabies vaccines for dogs and cats, DHPP vaccines for dogs, FVRCP vaccines for cats, and microchips.
Animal Control Director Charlie Long says all dogs should be on a leash, and all cats must be in a crate while attending the clinic.
Because of the event, the Chattooga County Animal Shelter will be closed today.
Major improvements are now underway at the Chattooga County Animal Shelter, where construction has officially begun on new solid block walls inside the kennel area.
This week’s WZQZ Pet of the Week is Kuma, a friendly and playful dog currently waiting for adoption at the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.
Kuma is described as a sweet male dog who gets along well with other dogs and has a fun, energetic personality. Shelter staff say he would make a great addition to a loving home and is ready for a fresh start with a new family.

An important plea is going out from Friends of Chattooga County Animal Shelter, where supporters say more volunteers are needed to help meet the daily needs of animals waiting for homes. A new friendly rivalry is underway in Chattooga County, as Chattooga and Trion face off in the Battle of the Beds to raise money for the Chattooga County Animal Shelter. The goal of the month-and-a-half-long campaign is to replace worn-out beds currently used by shelter pets with new elevated beds that offer better comfort, cleanliness, and support.
The Chattooga County Animal Shelter will host a special adoption event this Saturday, March 14, from 10 AM until 4 PM.
