Run & Walk for Sierra Set for April 11 in Trion

The community is coming together in Trion to support a local inspiration with a special 5K Run & Walk for Sierra on April 11.

Sierra Bennett, a 23-year-old with cerebral palsy, has found joy and purpose in chair racing, inspiring others with her determination and positive spirit. The daughter of Carrie and Josh Bennett, Sierra continues to compete and stay active in the racing community.

The event will take place at Trion Town Hall, located at 1220 Pine Street. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the race starting at 9:00 a.m.

There is no required registration fee, but donations of any amount are encouraged and will go directly toward helping Sierra cover race fees so she can continue doing what she loves.

Organizers say the event is not only about supporting Sierra, but also about bringing the community together for a meaningful cause.

Those who cannot attend but still wish to help are encouraged to donate.

Vietnam Veterans Lunch Happening Today In Summerville

The annual Vietnam Veterans Lunch is taking place today in Summerville, honoring those who served during the Vietnam era.

The event will be held at 12 noon at the Chattooga County Memorial Home on Memorial Drive. All veterans who served during the Vietnam era—from 1955 through 1975—are invited to attend, along with their families.

Organizers say the luncheon will include a special program recognizing the service and sacrifice of Vietnam-era veterans. Widows and widowers of veterans will also be honored, with certificates presented in memory of their loved ones.

The event provides an opportunity for fellowship, food, and time spent with fellow veterans and members of the community, as the nation prepares to observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day this weekend.

The annual luncheon is hosted by VFW Post 6688, its Auxiliary, and local volunteers.

Hurley Community Development Center to Celebrate Grand Opening in Summerville

The Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce will host a grand opening and open house for the newly renovated Hurley Community Development Center on Thursday, April 2, from 5 PM to 7 PM. The event will take place at 10050 Commerce Street in downtown Summerville.

The updated facility is designed to serve as a hub for corporate events, training sessions, and private meetings. Chamber officials say the move to this central downtown location will allow them to better support local businesses and provide information to visitors.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held shortly after 5 PM, and the doors will remain open until 7 PM. Refreshments will be provided, and the public is invited to attend and tour the facility.

Menlo Easter Egg Hunt This Saturday

 

Families in Chattooga County are invited to celebrate Easter with a community egg hunt this weekend in Menlo.

The Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, March 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Menlo Park.

Organizers say the event is open to the public and encourages families to come out and enjoy a fun morning together.

The event is hosted by the Mayor and Menlo City Council, who wish everyone a Happy Easter.

Annual Vietnam Veterans Lunch Set For Friday In Summerville

The annual Vietnam Veterans Lunch will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, at noon at the Chattooga County Memorial Home, located at 818 Memorial Drive in Summerville.

All veterans who served at any post around the world during the Vietnam era from 1955 through 1975, along with their families, are encouraged to attend. Organizers say the event will provide an opportunity for fellowship, food, and time with fellow veterans and friends.

Widows of Vietnam-era veterans and their families are also invited as special guests. During the program, widows will be honored with a Certificate of Appreciation from the federal government, along with an Honor Certificate from the State of Georgia in memory of their husbands’ service.

Program speakers will include Georgia VFW State Commander Bill Miles and Commander Justin Hill of the United States Navy Reserve. Sunday, March 29, is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a time set aside to thank Vietnam veterans and their families for their service, sacrifice, and dedication.

Beginner Sewing Class Set at Chattooga Library

The Chattooga Library will host a Beginner Sewing class on Monday, April 13, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its location on Farrar Drive in Summerville.

The workshop is open to ages 12 and up and will give participants the chance to learn basic sewing skills while creating a reusable shopping bag with the help of a volunteer seamstress. The class is hosted by the Sara Hightower Regional Library System.

Easter Bunny Photo Event Planned at Sloppy Floyd State Park

Families in Chattooga County will have a chance to enjoy a festive spring outing when the Easter Bunny returns to Sloppy Floyd State Park next month for a special photo event.

Friends of Sloppy Floyd will host “Photos With the Easter Bunny” on Saturday, April 4, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the park office. Visitors are invited to bring their cameras and stop by for pictures with the Easter Bunny during the two-hour event.

The event offers local families a fun way to celebrate the Easter season and enjoy time together at the park.

A $10 ParkPass is required to attend.

Walker County Landfill Giving Away Free Straw During “Strawaplooza” Tuesday and Wednesday

In celebration of the first full week of spring, the Walker County Landfill will host “Strawapalooza” this Tuesday and Wednesday, March 24 & 25. There won’t be any musical acts performing, but there will be a lot of straw to give away.

Lucky Charm Cheer Classic Happening Today at Trion High School

The community is invited out today for the 1st Annual Lucky Charm Cheer Classic, a cheerleading competition and fundraiser benefiting Georgia Elite Allstars and Trion High School Cheerleading.

The event will take place today, Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in the Trion High School gymnasium.

The competition will feature recreation, performance, school, and all-star cheer and dance teams from across the region. Organizers say 21 teams and more than 200 athletes from surrounding counties are expected to compete, making for an afternoon filled with energy, entertainment, and community spirit.

Proceeds from the event will help support athlete development, competition opportunities, uniforms, and other program needs for both organizations.

Event organizer Tashia Knapp says the goal is to provide athletes with a fun opportunity to perform while also strengthening local cheer programs. She says community support for the event has been overwhelming.
