12-Year-Old Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle On Highway 114

A 12-year-old was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 114 in Summerville Wednesday evening.

According to a Summerville Police Department crash report, the accident happened September 30 in the area of Highway 114 and East Street/Ralph Stanley Drive.

Police said a 2011 Nissan Altima, driven by Teya Sharae Hedgcoth of Summerville, was traveling south on Highway 114 when the collision occurred. The 12-year-old pedestrian was crossing the highway from east to west.

The crash report lists failure to yield as a contributing factor for the pedestrian and lists no contributing factors for the driver. The vehicle was traveling straight when the accident occurred.

The child suffered what the report classified as a suspected minor or visible injury and was transported by Atrium EMS to Floyd Hospital for treatment.

According to the report, EMS was notified at approximately 8:14 PM, arrived at the scene at 8:21 PM and arrived at the hospital shortly before 9 PM.

A witness who was crossing the highway with the child confirmed the events to the investigating officer.

State Sen. Lanny Thomas says Georgia motorists are getting some relief at the gas pump following the suspension of the state’s motor fuel tax.

Thomas, who represents Senate District 53, said Tuesday that suspending the tax will save motorists 33.3 cents per gallon on gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon on diesel fuel. Those figures match Georgia’s current motor-fuel excise tax rates.

“Today, Georgians are waking up to some much-needed relief at the pump,” Thomas said in a statement posted Tuesday morning.

Thomas credited Gov. Brian Kemp and Republican leaders in the General Assembly with taking action to provide relief as Georgians continue dealing with higher fuel and other household costs.

Thomas said the savings could particularly benefit people commuting to work, parents taking children to school, small-business owners and farmers who regularly purchase gasoline or diesel.

The Trion Republican said he supports efforts aimed at allowing Georgians to keep more of their income and described the motor-fuel tax suspension as one way state leaders are addressing affordability.

Thomas currently represents Georgia Senate District 53.

The latest suspension took effect at midnight and is scheduled to remain in effect for 30 days, according to Thomas’ statement.

A Summerville man was cited after police say he left the scene of a traffic accident last week.

According to a Summerville Police Department citation, Evan Blake Adams, 22, was cited following an accident that occurred around 8:14 AM on September 17 near Fifth Street and Highland Avenue in Summerville.

Police say Adams was involved in an accident and allegedly left the scene without notifying 911. The citation lists the charge as leaving the scene of an accident under Georgia law.

The vehicle listed on the citation was a 2013 Dodge Journey. No injuries were indicated on the report.

Adams was ordered to appear in Summerville Municipal Court on November 19 at 9 AM.

An 18-year-old Summerville man was charged with DUI and other offenses following a single-vehicle crash over the weekend.

According to Summerville Police Department citations, Gavin Ladon Palmer, 18, was involved in a crash on Woodland Avenue on September 20. Police say Palmer was traveling southbound when his vehicle ran off the roadway for approximately 200 feet before striking a power pole.

The investigating officer reported observing signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes, the odor of alcohol and being unbalanced. The citation indicates a blood test was administered, with results listed as pending.

Palmer was cited for DUI — alcohol/less safe, failure to maintain a single lane, and possession of alcoholic beverages by a person under 21.
