Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Rock Spring Office Closing Temporarily For Repairs

The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s office in Rock Spring will close to the public beginning Monday, August 24th, as renovation and repair work continues at the Local Government Services building.

The building, located at 122 Highway 95, sustained substantial water damage in April after a pipe burst overnight, flooding several offices and public areas.

A restoration team began work earlier this month, starting on the second floor, where the Walker County Assessor’s office is located. Work on that portion of the building is not expected to be completed until after Labor Day.

The Tax Commissioner’s office handles tax payments for land, homes and personal property, along with vehicle tag and title services.

While the Rock Spring office is closed, most Tax Commissioner staff will relocate to the Rossville office at 2012 McFarland Gap Road. Additional service windows will be available there for the public. The Rossville office is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM until 5 PM, and a night drop is also available.

Officials say operations at the Planning and Zoning department, which is also located inside the Local Government Services building, are not expected to be disrupted.

The building is insured.

Walker County Government Building To Reopen After Water Damage

The Walker County Local Government Services building, located at 122 Highway 95 in Rock Spring, will reopen to the public on Monday, April 27th following a temporary closure caused by a burst pipe last week.

The incident resulted in water damage throughout the lower level of the building, prompting repairs and limited access to certain areas.

When the Tax Commissioner’s Office reopens Monday, officials say there will be limited public space available. Despite those constraints, all tag and tax services will still be offered to residents.

The Local Government Services building houses several key departments, including the Tax Commissioner’s Office, Assessors Office, Planning and Zoning, and Codes Enforcement. The Planning Office has already resumed operations, though with limited space for the public.

IRS Extends Office Hours At Taxpayer Assistance Centers During Filing Season

The Internal Revenue Service has announced extended weekly office hours at more than 200 Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country to give taxpayers more time to receive in-person help during filing season. The expanded weekday hours will remain in place through Thursday, April 30.

Taxpayers can find out whether a nearby Taxpayer Assistance Center is offering extended hours by using the TAC Locator tool on IRS.gov. The online tool provides office locations, directions, available services, and information about extended hours.

In addition to longer weekday hours, many Taxpayer Assistance Centers will also be open on select Saturdays through June 2026. During those Saturday hours, taxpayers can access all regularly available TAC services except for making cash payments. The IRS encourages taxpayers to check the website regularly because participating locations and available hours may change without notice.
