Mobile Home Taxes Due April 1 In Chattooga County; Late Fees Waived Until April 2

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton is reminding local property owners that mobile home taxes are due April 1st.

However, the Chattooga County Tax Commissioner’s Office will be closed WEDNESDAY for the installation of a new server. Due to that closure, late fees will be waived until Thursday, April 2nd.

Hampton also reminds residents that homestead exemptions should be filed by April 1st in the Property Assessor’s Office, which is located in the Chattooga County Courthouse Annex across the hall from the tax office.

Unlike the tax office, the Property Assessor’s Office will be open on Wednesday.

Officials note that the Property Assessor’s Office does not accept payments or renew vehicle tags.

Residents with mobile home tax business are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Advance Voting for the April 7, 2026 Special Election Runoff to fill the unexpired terms of Marjorie Taylor Greene (US House of Representatives, District 14) and Colton More (State Senate, District 53) will begin today, Monday, March 30, 2026 at 8:30 AM and end at 5 PM on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Daily hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. All Advance Voting will take place at the Chattooga County Registrars Office located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville.

On Election Day, April 7, 2026, the polls are open from 7 AM – 7 PM. All Election Day voting takes place at the assigned polling locations, not the Registrars Office. Polling places in Chattooga County include: Gore Fire Hall, Lyerly Community Center, old Menlo City Hall, Chattooga County Civic Center and the Trion Recreation Department.

Government issued photo ID is required. The registration deadline for this election was March 9, 2026.

A proposed bill in Georgia could help return billions of dollars in unclaimed money to residents, but the effort is facing challenges at the State Capitol.

Lawmakers say the state is currently holding more than $3 billion in unclaimed property, which includes things like uncashed checks, old bank accounts, refunds, and other funds that belong to individuals.

The legislation would allow the Georgia Department of Revenue to automatically match records and send checks directly to residents, especially for smaller amounts, without requiring people to file a claim.

Supporters say the goal is to make it easier for Georgians to get their money back faster, cutting down on paperwork and making the process more efficient. However, the proposal has raised concerns among some lawmakers because parts of the bill could allow the state to take ownership of certain funds if they remain unclaimed for long periods of time.

The bill has already passed the State Senate but has stalled in a House committee, leaving its future uncertain as the legislative session continues.

The Floyd County Commission is expected to consider emergency funding to relocate several government offices following a fire that destroyed the Historic Floyd County Courthouse on Monday.

County officials say the building housed the Tax Commissioner, Tax Assessor, and Tag Office. All employees were safely evacuated after smoke was reported around 2:12 p.m., and supervisors conducted a roll call to ensure everyone made it out safely.

Rome-Floyd Fire Department crews worked for hours to battle the blaze, while multiple law enforcement agencies secured the area as smoke spread across downtown Rome. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In the meantime, residents can still access services online, including property tax payments and tag renewals. County leaders say plans are already underway to establish temporary locations and restore in-person services as quickly as possible.
