Summerville Main Street is preparing to kick off the Christmas season with the Official Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting and Midnight Madness shopping event on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 26.

James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park in Chattooga County has two fall activities planned for Saturday, November 7, including a craft program for families and an evening nature hike.
The first event, called “Unbe-Leaf-Able Craft & Chat,” begins at 11 AM. Participants will explore the world of leaves, learn about the natural environment and create their own fall-themed snow globes.
Those attending are encouraged to bring a small container holding less than 10 ounces, although containers will also be provided. The activity costs $3 per person, and registration is required.
Later Saturday, park rangers will lead a Fall Foliage Nature Hike around the Lower Lake Trail beginning at 6 PM. Participants will have an opportunity to enjoy the changing leaves and sunset while learning more about the park’s natural surroundings.
Hikers should bring a flashlight, comfortable walking shoes and water. The group will meet at the park office, and advance registration is preferred.
The hike also costs $3 per person. A $10 park parking pass is required for both activities.

The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the deaths of two people found inside a residence in the Sugar Valley community over the weekend.
The Menlo Lions Club will be preparing its famous Brunswick stew this Friday, November 6, with proceeds going to help graduating seniors at Chattooga High School who plan to attend college next fall.
The annual-style fundraiser gives residents an opportunity to enjoy homemade Brunswick stew while supporting local students as they prepare to continue their education.
Lions Club members will prepare the stew on Friday, with orders available for pickup Saturday morning, November 7, between 7 AM and 10 AM at the Menlo School lunchroom.
The stew will be sold for $30 per gallon or $8 per quart.
Proceeds from the sale will support Chattooga High School seniors who are planning to attend college following graduation in 2027.

City officials say certain sections of the cemetery may be temporarily blocked or inaccessible while crews carry out the work.
Residents planning to visit gravesites are encouraged to use caution and be aware of maintenance crews and equipment operating in the area.
The work is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to maintain the safety and appearance of the cemetery.
Visitors should be prepared for temporary restrictions in areas where tree maintenance is taking place.
