Residents across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia are dealing with a mix of cold, wind, and fire weather concerns this weekend as a Fire Danger Statement remains in effect for much of north and east central Georgia on Saturday.
Very low relative humidity combined with gusty winds is creating dangerous conditions for outdoor burning. Officials urge residents to use extreme caution, as fires can spread quickly under these dry conditions. Relative humidity values are expected to dip into the 20 percent range across much of Northwest Georgia, including areas along and north of I-85.
A Wind Advisory is also in place for the northeast Georgia mountains until 1 PM EST, with strong northwest winds producing gusts near 30 mph. While Chattooga County is not under the advisory, residents can still expect breezy conditions contributing to bitterly cold wind chills early Saturday morning. In higher elevations across the region, wind chills could drop into the low teens or near single digits before temperatures rebound later in the day.
Despite the cold start, afternoon highs are expected to climb into the upper 40s and low 50s in Northwest Georgia, with slightly warmer temperatures farther south. Conditions will gradually improve as the weekend continues, with less wind and moderating temperatures by Sunday.
Looking ahead, a noticeable warm-up is on the way next week. Forecasts call for high temperatures running 6 to 14 degrees above seasonal averages, with many areas in Northwest Georgia reaching the upper 60s to low 70s by midweek. While rain chances remain low early in the week, there is a 20–30 percent chance of showers by Wednesday into Thursday as a weather system moves through the region.
Fire weather concerns may persist through Sunday due to continued dry air, and residents are encouraged to stay alert to updated forecasts and local advisories.
