After a mostly quiet start to Friday in Chattooga County, residents should be ready for wet roads and off-and-on showers as rain builds back into Northwest Georgia late today and lasts into Saturday. Forecasters expect clouds to thicken through the afternoon as moisture streams north, setting the stage for showers to spread in late Friday evening and overnight.

The steadiest rain is most likely overnight into early Saturday, when drivers may notice reduced visibility and slick pavement—especially on rural routes and along higher-elevation roads where water can collect quickly. While a few claps of thunder aren’t out of the question, the probability of severe storms remains low, with the better chance for any stronger storms expected farther south in Georgia.

Rain totals across Northwest Georgia will depend on where the heaviest bands set up, but most locations are expected to pick up roughly a half inch to around an inch and a half between late Friday and Saturday. That amount can be enough to cause ponding in low-lying spots and along shoulders, and it can also make the first few minutes of rainfall extra slick as water mixes with oil and debris on roadways. With leaves and winter debris still common this time of year, clogged storm drains could lead to localized standing water in town and near smaller creeks.

Temperatures won’t be an issue for winter travel—at least not in the form of ice. Afternoon highs are expected to stay mild, generally in the upper 50s to low 60s through the weekend, and the pattern remains warmer than normal heading into next week.

Even after the main push of rain moves out, the broader outlook suggests Northwest Georgia may hold onto more clouds at times, with a few additional spotty showers possible later next week as another weak disturbance approaches.
