Vietnam Veterans Lunch Set for March 27 in Chattooga County

The annual Vietnam War Veterans Lunch will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Chattooga County Memorial Home.

The program and lunch will begin at 12 noon and will honor those who served during the Vietnam era, along with their families.

Organizers say widows and widowers of Vietnam-era veterans will also be recognized during the event with Honor Certificates from the State of Georgia. Those wishing to be included are asked to call Kim Snow at the Extension Office at 706-857-0744 by Monday, March 23, so their spouse’s service can be properly honored.

All veterans who served during the Vietnam era from November 1, 1955, through May 15, 1975, whether in-country or at other duty posts, are invited to attend with their families. Spouses of Vietnam veterans who have passed away are also invited as special guests along with their families.

The annual event is sponsored by VFW Post 6688 and Auxiliary along with local volunteers.

For more information, call Barbara Reece at 706-857-8478 or Odell Anderson at 706-397-2394.

Fire under Investigation at Sloppy Floyd Lake Road Residence

Firefighters responded Monday to a structure fire at 251 Sloppy Floyd Lake Road. Summerville, Hays Correctional and Gore fire departments all responded to the scene.

Fire officials told WZQZ News the fire is believed to have started at the front of the residence, although the exact cause remains under investigation. Firefighters say suppression efforts were complicated by a large amount of material in and around the front of the home, which added fuel to the fire.

Officials said this was the second structure fire reported on the property this year.

City Of Summerville Launches Water Bill Protection Plan

The City of Summerville has launched a new Water Bill Protection Plan designed to help residents avoid unexpected spikes in their water bills caused by major leaks.

City Manager Jason Winters said the city has occasionally received complaints about unusually high water bills caused by leaks that went undetected for several days. The new program is intended to provide a safety net for customers in those situations while still encouraging residents to monitor their water usage.

Officials say the protection plan is designed to help cover situations where a major leak runs for several days before being discovered, which can cause water usage to increase dramatically. City leaders note that similar programs are offered in many other cities and say the plan is meant to provide peace of mind for residents while helping protect them from extremely high utility bills.
