Looking for a loyal companion with a gentle personality? Meet Thunder, this week’s featured pet from the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.

Thunder is a male dog who is described as loving, calm, and very laid back. Shelter staff say he gets along well with other dogs and would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for a friendly, easygoing pet.

Thunder is available for adoption now through the Chattooga County Animal Shelter, located at 464 Red Oak Drive in Summerville.

The adoption fee is just $25.

Walker County Receives Statewide Award For Animal Welfare Program

Walker County has received a 2026 Georgia County Excellence Award from ACCG, Georgia’s County Association, for innovation in county government.

The county was recognized for its spay and neuter voucher initiative, a program designed to reduce unwanted litters and improve animal welfare across Walker County.

The program provides up to 40 free vouchers each month for companion animals. Each voucher is valued at $200 and covers spay or neuter services, microchipping, and a rabies vaccination.

During the first eight months, Walker County Animal Shelter staff issued about 190 vouchers, resulting in 61 female cats, 36 male cats, 44 female dogs, and 49 male dogs being altered.

County officials say the program is already making an impact. Compared to 2024, the shelter saw a 64% decrease in owner surrenders during September, October, and November. Surrenders of kitten and puppy litters dropped by nearly 80% during that same period.

The program is funded entirely through donations, and more than 500 people are currently on the waiting list for a voucher.

Walker County was one of six counties recognized statewide for programs that improve their communities.

An important plea is going out from Friends of Chattooga County Animal Shelter, where supporters say more volunteers are needed to help meet the daily needs of animals waiting for homes. Shelter organizers say there is truly something for everyone to do, and no amount of help is too small when it comes to caring for the dogs and cats at the facility.

Sherbet the Cat Looking for a Forever Home in Chattooga County

A 10-year-old cat named Sherbet is looking for a loving home through the Chattooga County Animal Shelter in Summerville.

Sherbet, described as a laid-back “lap lounger” and window watcher, was surrendered by his previous owner and is now hoping to find a quiet home where he can be the only cat. Shelter staff say he would make a great companion for someone looking for a calm and affectionate pet.

The Chattooga County Animal Shelter is located at 464 Red Oak Drive and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Wednesday visits available by appointment. The shelter also opens the first Saturday of each month for adoptions.

The Chattooga County Animal Shelter will host a special adoption event this Saturday, March 14, from 10 AM until 4 PM.

A number of dogs and cats will be available for adoption, including Ember, Rem, Lick, Rosie, Kuma, Hoss, Diesel, Gojo, Buster, Ranger, Boone, Maple, Radar, Ollie, Freckles, Dottie, Pepper, Ozzie, and George. Shelter officials encourage residents to stop by, meet the animals, and consider giving a pet a new home.
