Summerville Parks And Recreation Shares Sports Officials Training Opportunity

Summerville Parks and Recreation is sharing information about a new statewide opportunity for anyone interested in becoming a sports official.

The Georgia Recreation and Park Association has partnered with the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation to offer sports officials training for anyone 16 years of age or older who is willing to complete the online training.

The program includes sports officials training, medical insurance, liability insurance, background checks, and uniform and equipment funding. The upfront cost to take the online training course is just $20.

The first training course available is for baseball and softball umpires. Additional training videos for tackle football, flag football, and soccer are expected in July, with volleyball and basketball training videos scheduled for August.

Those interested can scan the QR code shared by Summerville Parks and Recreation to get started.

Summerville Parks and Recreation has extended sign-ups through this Friday, June 12, to fill several remaining youth age group spots.

Openings remain for 6U, 8U and 11U participants. The department says it can still accept 10 more players in the 6U division, 5 more in 8U and 5 more in 11U.

Registration is available online at www.summervillerec.org.

The Summerville Parks and Recreation Department has announced the hiring of Shadow Day as its new Administrative Assistant, effective May 1, 2026.

Day joins the department full-time after ten years of service in a similar role with the Chattooga County School System. Parks and Recreation Director Adam Wilson said Day is a natural fit because of her strong community ties, administrative experience, and sports background.

Day also holds a special place in the department’s history, having won a state championship as both a player in 2005 and as a coach in 2024.

Her responsibilities will include day-to-day office operations, planning special events, assisting with sports programs, and helping with a future summer camp.

Final Day for Summerville Spring Sports Registration is Today

Today marks the final day for Spring Sports Registration for the 2026 season through Summerville Parks and Recreation.

Online registration is open through the end of the day today, Sunday, February 1 at www.summervillerec.org.

Sports offered for the spring season include Tee-Ball, Baseball, Softball, and Volleyball.

Officials also remind parents that the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) has updated its age control date for baseball and softball. Player ages for those sports will now be determined based on age as of June 30, 2026.

Summerville Parks and Recreation encourages families to complete registration before the deadline and review the updated age guidelines prior to signing up.
