One of Northwest Georgia’s longest-running college traditions returns this fall as Berry College prepares to welcome generations of Vikings back to campus for Mountain Day Weekend, October 2-4, 2026.
Members of the Chattooga High School Class of 1988 are being invited to reconnect later this month for a mini-reunion and planning meeting as preparations begin for the class’s upcoming 40th reunion.
The City of Summerville is inviting the public to attend the first of two open house celebrations today as it highlights recent improvements to the city’s recreational facilities.
The first event will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Summerville Recreation Center, where city officials will celebrate the installation of the facility’s new gymnasium HVAC system. The public is invited to attend.
A second celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 24, at 8:30 p.m. at Dunson Field, where the city will officially unveil the new MUSCO ballfield lighting system during youth baseball and softball games.
Summerville Parks and Recreation Director Adam Wilson said both events are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to join the city in celebrating the completion of these important recreation improvements.

Graduation season is just around the corner for students in Chattooga County and Trion City Schools, and recent data shows strong performance in Trion along with steady long-term improvement in the county system.
A new exhibit at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center in Rome is putting real cancer journeys front and center—through powerful portraits and personal stories from patients receiving care close to home. One of those featured is Miriam Little, an oncology social worker who spent a decade helping cancer patients find resources and support, before learning in 2023 that she had ovarian cancer herself.
February is more than just a bridge between winter and spring—it’s a season for connection, and Summerville Main Street is inviting the community to help “paint the town red” with the return of the “Live, Love, Local” Heart Project. Throughout the month of February, Downtown Summerville will be lined with personalized, heart-shaped messages designed to celebrate the people, places, and stories that make the community special.
Organizers say the project is a chance for everyone to share a message in a fun and visible way, whether it’s a shout-out to a favorite small business, a tribute to a loved one, a school celebration, or a note of encouragement for the community. Hearts can be purchased as a single-sided display for $30 or double-sided for $50, and orders can be placed by visiting the Summerville Main Street office at 179 Union Street.

Banks, the post office, and government offices in Chattooga County and in the cities of Summerville, Trion, Lyerly, and Menlo are closed today, Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the Civil Rights Movement who helped bring national attention to the fight for equality through nonviolent action. The holiday is also recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging people to give back to their communities as a way to honor Dr. King’s message.
Locally, a Day of Service will be held Monday, January 19th at Fairway Recreation Center, 81 Senior Drive, Summerville. The event begins at 10 AM with Felicia’s Kids, and everyone is invited to come and join this event sponsored by the Chattooga County MLK Committee.
Folks looking to start 2026 on the right foot are invited to James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park for the park’s annual First Day Hikes on Thursday, January 1, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
