Vegetable Gardening Class Set for Wednesday at Chattooga County Agricultural Center

Residents who want to grow their own vegetables can get ready for spring planting at a Vegetable Gardening Class happening tomorrow, Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m. at the Chattooga County Agricultural Center, located at 40 Middle School Road.

Organizers say the class will cover site preparation, soil fertility, planting practices, and other tips to help gardeners prepare for the upcoming growing season. Space is limited, and those planning to attend are asked to call 706-857-0744 to reserve a spot.

The program is offered through UGA Extension – Chattooga County and is an equal opportunity event. Anyone needing reasonable accommodation or language access services should contact the Chattooga County Extension Office at least three weeks prior to the program date.

Milo Named WZQZ Pet of the Week at Chattooga County Animal Shelter

Milo has been named this week’s WZQZ Pet of the Week and is currently available for adoption at the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.

Milo is a 2-year-old neutered male who shelter staff say is good with other dogs. He was surrendered by his previous owner and is now looking for a new forever home. His adoption fee is $25.

The Chattooga County Animal Shelter is located at 464 Red Oak Drive in Summerville. The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays by appointment, and the first Saturday of every month for adoptions only.

Georgia Gas Prices Drop to $2.69; Chattooga Among State’s Lowest

Georgia drivers are seeing some welcome relief at the pump this week, with the statewide average falling to $2.69 per gallon, three cents lower than last week, the same as a month ago, and 30 cents below this time last year. At that price, filling a standard 15-gallon tank costs about $40.35.

Qualifying Set for State Court Judge, Board of Education Seats in Chattooga County

Qualifying for State Court Judge and Chattooga County Board of Education Seats 2, 3, and 4 will take place March 2 through March 6, 2026.

Qualifying will be held in the Chattooga County Registrar’s Office, located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville, for all Independent and Nonpartisan candidates. Hours for qualifying are Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

Election officials remind residents that Advance Voting will still be ongoing during that same time period. Anyone with questions about qualifying can email chattoogaregistrar@gmail.com, call 706-857-0739, or visit the Registrar’s Office in person.

Poultry Project 2026 Sign-Ups Set for March 7 at Chattooga County Agricultural Center

Local students can get involved in 4-H style summer learning with Poultry Project 2026, with sign-ups scheduled for Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 a.m. at the Chattooga County Agricultural Center, 40 Middle School Road.

Organizers say students who participate will purchase eight chicks to raise through the summer, then bring them to the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair on the last weekend in August. During the fair, students will select their best three birds to compete in the poultry show and take part in the auction.

Nancy Alene “Nanie” Light, Obit (C)

Ms. Nancy Alene “Nanie” Light, age 85 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, February 22, 2026 in a Rome hospital.

Ms. Light was born in Rome, Georgia on December 18, 1940, daughter of the late Jeddy S. Light and Mildred Frances Ashworth Light. She was a member of the Sonrise Community Church, where she was active in the Nursery and the Fellowship Hall Ministries. She loved God and enjoyed serving her church. Ms. Light was employed with the former Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank, retiring as assistant Vice President after over 35 years of service. Following her retirement, she worked with her brother as a decorator in the wallpaper business. In her down time, she enjoyed working in her yard and reading.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Light was preceded in death by her siblings, Brenda Raynell Wiseman, Faye Neil Duke, Frances Maxine Jones, Patsy Ann Woods, Jerry Maxwell Light, Carole Sue Ash, Deborah Jean Warnock and Michael Lewis Light; and a nephew, Steven Jones.

Ms. Light is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Liz and Jim Bennett, Fredda McCrickard and Roxie and Larry Weesner; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Debbie Light; her beloved fur baby, Merzedez; and a number of nieces, nephews and additional family members.

Funeral Services for Ms. Light will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Marcus A. McCrickard officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Larry Weesner, Shannon Bennett, Rhett Bennett, John Critchfield, Zeb Whitehead and Tshombe High. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Women’s Sunday School Class and members of the Sonrise Community Church.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the Coffman Funeral Home from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour.
