Pickled Okra Workshop Coming To Chattooga County Extension Office

Residents interested in learning the proper way to preserve one of the South’s favorite vegetables will have an opportunity this week at the Chattooga County Extension Office.

A Pickled Okra food preservation workshop will be held Thursday, September 24, from 5 until 7 PM at Chattooga County UGA Extension Service / 4-H, located at 40 Middle School Road in Summerville. The class is part of a series of hands-on food preservation workshops offered this year.

The workshop costs $25 per person, and participation is limited to 15 people. Payment is required to secure a spot in the class. Those interested in attending should contact the Extension Office at 706-857-0744 to check availability and register.

UGA Extension’s food preservation programs focus on research-based, tested methods for safely preserving food at home. Extension offers instruction in areas including canning, freezing, drying, jams and jellies, and pickled foods.

MRS. EDNA EARL (PARKER) KENDRICK, age 89, of Highway #100, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 19, 2026 at Her residence. A native of Summerville, Georgia, She was born to the late Earl Parker and Viola Chandler Parker on April 13, 1937. Mrs. Kendrick was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and had taught Sunday School for 30 years. From 1995 until 2005, She owned and operated The Lookout Restaurant at Cloudland and later a secretary for Karastan-Bigelow in Lyerly. She Loved visiting and spending time with Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and also enjoyed spending time with her Brothers and Sisters. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by husband the late John Robert Kendrick and sister, the late Carolyn Lockhart.

Surviving are daughters, Joy (Dave) Nichols, Bonnie (Randy) Steward, and Amy (Jonas) Cox; grandchildren, Jennifer Nichols, Jessica (Ro) Mendoze, Lance (Elaine) Nichols, Levi (Brittany) Nichols, Persephone Cox, Rosemary Cox, Aaralyn Cox, and Micah Cox; Ten Great Grandchildren; siblings Ann Brooks, Becky Meadows, Jenny (Eugene) Mitchell, Jo Buice, Jack (Ruth) Parker, Jim (Mary) Parker, Sandra Hudson, Ken (Martha) Parker, Lynn Webb, Marsha (Tom) Booker; several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday (September 22nd) at 4:00 P.M. from the Summerville First Baptist Church with Rev. Stanley Smith, Dr. Paul Mason, and Dr. Randy Clayton officiating, interment in Greenhills Memory Garden. Pallbearers will be Lance Nichols, Levi Nichols, Daniel Nichols, Scottie Buice, Randy Steward, Jonas Cox, Heath Mitchell, Steve Kendrick, and David Reynolds; Honorary Pallbearers, the Fideilis Sunday School Class of Summerville First Baptist Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 until 4 P.M. at the Church.

Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in charge of arrangements for Mrs. Edna Earl Parker Kendrick, who passed away Saturday.

Connect City Church Hosts Night To Shine

A special night celebrating people with special needs is coming to Summerville in February, with registration set to begin next month.

Connect City Church will host Night to Shine on Friday, February 12, 2027, an event sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.

Night to Shine is a red-carpet experience for people with special needs ages 14 and older. Guests are treated as honored VIPs throughout the evening, with activities including a red-carpet entrance, professional photographs, dinner and dancing.

One of the highlights of the evening is the crowning ceremony, when each guest is crowned a king or queen.

Organizers say the goal is for every participant to leave the event feeling loved, honored and celebrated.

Sign-ups will begin in October, with additional registration and event information expected to be announced soon.

The event will be held at Connect City Church in Summerville and is sponsored locally by SpeakLife and Connect City Church.

Chattooga County Courthouse Flag To Fly At Half-Staff In Memory Of Ronnie Winters

The flag at the Chattooga County Courthouse will be flown at half-staff Sunday, September 20, in memory of Ronnie Winters.

Chattooga County officials announced the tribute Saturday, remembering Winters as both a respected local businessman and a veteran who served his country.

“Mr. Winters was not only a respected businessman in our community but also a veteran that served his country,” the announcement from the Chattooga County Commissioner’s Office stated. “He was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed.”

County officials also extended their condolences to Winters’ family and loved ones.

The courthouse flag will remain at half-staff Sunday as Chattooga County honors Winters’ life, his military service and his contributions to the community.
